Well, he was trained in Chinese Opera…. which, apparently, was a lot more exciting back in the day than regular old opera without the grueling physical stunts.
Oh dear, Manolo, I love you and your site, so I am a bit saddened that you would take a cheap shot like this. (I’m not talking about Jackie Chan, I’m talking about the title of the post).
The lady in question is Michelle Yeoh (pronounced YO). She’s a big celebrity in Asia, especially in her home country Malaysia…
Heh the Manolo he is simply having a giggle of the innocent kind, just like the sort of giggle i have when hear Bush 2.0 say new-ku-lear instead of nuclear!
The Manolo, he makes his little jokes and we laugh in the good spirit. But the Jackie Chan, maybe not so good spirits, he could make the Manolo walk funny.
The Lagerfeld, I do not think he has the kung fu.
We love the Manolo, he should stick to pasting Eurotrash, maybe.
The Fug Girls would probably frown on the orange hat / lace shirt / orange belt / jeans combination, but I think Michelle Yeoh pulls it off rather nicely.
And as far as I’m concerned, Jackie can wear anything he wants long as he starts making movies with Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao again.
PC….is it of the relevance? Manolo, he gently pokes the fun at the everyone…EVERYONE…and we love it and we laugh. Why should the Jackie Chan and the Yuen Biao also not bask in the Manolo’s glorious, tasteful humor? The Jackie Chan, he is the svelte but he is also the saavy. I am not of the doubt that he is having the good chuckle himself while saying “Bravo, Manolo!”.
The funny part about this post, is the other night I went for sushi and the sushi chef, for whatever reason, decided to sing this very song whilst in the middle of fixing us a rainbow roll. So you’re right on Manolo, and also, sometimes life is stranger than fiction….
I think the saddened defenders of the Chan are under the impression that skin color somehow makes dialect humor More Serious. Get over it, please – if you aren’t offended by Manolo’s writing, with the Spanish fashion designer accent, then you really need to think about why you’re offended by that one headline. And if you start saying things like The Europeans Are Terrible Oppressors – well, have you read any Chinese history? Or American history? Because lots of Chinese were oppressed in the US, but so were lots of people from a variety of countries in Europe who arrived here with little money and education.
(Of course, I adore the Manolo, because well-crafted dialect humor used to support excellent writing, does not bother an Italian-American who grew up in western Canada and who has heard more unskilled dialect humor from more diverse sources and in more languages than you can probably imagine. I do, however, have a very sore spot when it comes to the idea that some immigrants are more equal than others.)
ON another note – I am impressed that Jackie Chan makes that jacket look so damn fine – it’s well-cut, and I’m a sucker for a Mandarin collar and frog closures, but isn’t Cher cold without her bedspread?
I think jackie chan and Datuk Michelle Yeoh looks great here….and i totally salute them for taking time to come/come back to Malaysia and participate in the “Force of nature” event and contribute to the fund raising for the tsunami victims. *clap clap clap*…. doesnt matter how bad u sound jackie……as long as ppl are willing to donate, thats all that matters……
i dont know about u guys but i totally love the idea of “east meet west” fashion fusion Michelle is spotting here…..The traditional malay “Kebaya” and jeans. Thats the way i would wear them….errr…..and i’d loose the hat

The Manolo he cannot help it. The humor of the dialect, it makes the Manolo laugh.

I thought it was JLo too, but no, it’s just that familiar hat shape and seemingly curvy hips due to camera angle.

Funny picture, Manolo, but the title and the implied joke of it makes me sad, too.

Manolo is right–it is funny. It is time for P.C. to go the way of the poncho.

True, it is not PC but the Manolo makes me laugh, as always. Jackie Chan has certainly played his accent for laughs in his US movies.

“PC” is a meaningless term used to shut down discussion or dialogue.
