A beard is the fellow that accompanies a friend’s lady/man (there are variations, of course) whilst he is out of town on business.

The beard is a manly chap, with Honor solid as gold who accompanies his friends’ lady around town and keeps a truly platonic relationship — s/He is there to keep an eye on him/her for the friend.

Is only my opinion, is all.

Interesting. I always thought the term “beard” referenced a disguise. Like the gay man keeps a beautiful woman on his arm to disguise his homosexuality. In other words, she masks his true identity like a fake beard and mustache would.

“Beard” has also applied (see Lawrence Sanders novels) to a situation where a married man with a lover has another man accompany the happy pair to say a restaurant or a play, so they can appear together in public without being detected–ostensibly she is dating or is “with” the other man; the other man is the ‘beard.’ In general I think it applies to anyone who allows somebody to pose as other than what they are.
