I think it’s adorable! We mustn’t forget that the key to being a fabulous woman is in embracing every curve with confidence. I mean c’mon, there are no rolls, there is no Tara Reid strange melting-stomach effect, and she is most definitely not the crazy psycho hose-beast that is Kirstie Alley. She has smooth lovely skin and a cute little belly button. Women should be curvy, not concave.

  2. Annalucia May 15, 2005 at 12:59 pm #

If the Kelly Clarkson is going to show that much flesh she should at least buy the jingly hip-scarf and take some lessons in the belly dance. Then at least the display will be put to good use.

  3. sweetiedarling May 15, 2005 at 1:11 pm #

While I agree with the Manolo’s wisdom regarding the public baring of the belly, I enjoy the Kelly Clarkson having a bit of a tummy (like the Madonna in the early years) rather than the revolting protruding hip bones that many of the Hollywood starlets bare publicly. I think the Tara Reid would do well to adhere to the Manolo’s advice.

  4. Lexington Green May 15, 2005 at 1:30 pm #

She is a fairly pretty but otherwise normal looking young, adult female. A little tummy is OK. It is a relief to see a performer whose body is not all manufactured and phony. We’ll see how long that lasts. On a related point, the music is execrable.

  5. Courtney May 15, 2005 at 2:11 pm #

Hmm, I think “the Evil One” aka K.L., would agree with you Manolo! Which is why I am sad to see you make such a comment. Maybe she should buy his book. Seriously, I don’t think she’s fat at all! Thin (but not neccesarily toned or anorexic-looking) girls who are overly self-conscious to the point of not wearing what they want to wear are such a drag. That being said, I really hate the shirt though.

  6. caia May 15, 2005 at 3:24 pm #

I must agree with Gina. While I am not so fond of her outfit, and would never listen to her music, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Kelly Clarkson’s body. I find the super-skinny, spot-my-collar-bones-from-fifty-paces look, that seems to be de rigeur in Hollywood these days, very offputting and unattractive. Therefore I am proud of a girl with some (very small) curves not letting those curves stop her from wearing what she wants.

If the Manolo wishes to mock the Kelly Clarkson, as I can see he might, in this picture alone he could start with the hair, the shirt whose sleeves appear to be attached with electrical tape, or what appears to be a Michael Jackson homage bit of leather on her left hand.

  7. Kate May 15, 2005 at 3:49 pm #

She looks fine. She’s what, 110 there, 120 at the most? With her height, she’s close to under weight.

It’s almost impossible for a woman to have an actual six pack and a period at the same time. She looks fit, and with how she seems to be built, she’d have to threaten her health to look skinnier or more built.

That said, that outfit doesn’t flatter her build. But it doesn’t flatter a lot of women’s builds. It’s like the poncho, in a way.

  8. Mimi May 15, 2005 at 4:17 pm #

The point here is not Kelly Clarkson’s weight, but the fact that she is wearing something that is so unflattering–she is showcasing what is not the most attractive part of her body. Perhaps a similarity can be drawn in the following quote from the inimitable Miss Manners: “Showing one’s bosom is poor taste. Showing one’s lack of bosom in poor judgement.” And no, I’m not referring to her bosom. I’m referring to her stomach.

  9. The Scarlett May 15, 2005 at 5:12 pm #

The Scarlett agrees that Ms. Clarkson shouldn’t be showing the belly or the belly jewelry. It is not her best feature. She is not fat … not in the least … but showing us her belly makes us believe otherwise long enough for us to be distracted from her voice or her music. In fact, having her flesh hang out over her trousers can not be comfortable. The Scarlett worries that her pants gouging into her abdomen might in some way limit Ms. Clarkson’s vocal range.

  10. Caithlin May 15, 2005 at 7:02 pm #

Oh, Manolo! I think the Courtney put it well. Yes, this shirt might not be very flattering on her, but she has a perfectly fine, normal-looking stomach. Perhaps you did not intend your statements to be construed in this way, but it does sound like you are criticizing her for not being a stick–or a stick with abs of steel. In all honesty, I would rather see Kelly Clarkson, looking like a real person, than a frightfully skinny model any day.

  11. desertwind May 15, 2005 at 7:58 pm #

    Who is Kelly Clarkson?

  12. enygma May 15, 2005 at 11:29 pm #

I’m not a big fan of her songs, but I have to admit that this girl can really sing. Also, I wish she didn’t dress like that. I’m glad she’s a normal girl and not an anorexic tween, but really? That shirt?

  13. Evie May 16, 2005 at 10:50 am #

The shirt, it is ghastly. But the small tummy? I hope The Manolo did not intend to mock Miss Clarkson’s supposed weight issue? Because I for one do not see it. She is smaller than all but the most scrawny of the size 0 celebrities and models, and thus certainly thinner than most of the average–yet super-fantiastic!–readers of The Manolo’s fashion blogs. I choose to believe The Manolo was simply blinded by the awfulness of her top, because the alternative, it pains me.

  14. willow May 16, 2005 at 12:18 pm #

Six pack? Closer to a pony keg, actually. But I think that’s just the outfit. I can totally imagine her belly looking fantabulous in other clothings of the more tastefulness.

  15. Amy May 16, 2005 at 8:59 pm #

I think she’d look fabulous in some pants that FIT. I can’t wait until these damn low slung jeans go away – nobody but heroin chic celebrities and anorexics look good in them.

  16. amyc May 17, 2005 at 11:17 am #

Thank you Mimi. And Amy, nobody looks good in sleazy clothes…nobody

  17. Starphuck May 17, 2005 at 5:18 pm #

god i would do anything for a nonexistant belly like that

  18. VeddyVeddyBadMan May 18, 2005 at 10:23 am #

The correct size in pants helps immensely – go up 2 sizes, and voilá! No fat rolls! It’s a hard thing to swallow, though, to have to go up a few numbers on the pants, so I can sympathize.

  19. Kelly June 23, 2005 at 12:40 am #

first of all…the way the picture is cropped so all you can see is her belly definately throws you off a little big…secondly, thats not even fat, its like skin…kelly is thin enough! i mean any normal sized person with that shirt on would still look like that…she’s freakin hot, and if you didnt’ know, her music is #1 EVERYWHERE…why don’t you judge what you’re wearing for once.

  20. Crystal June 23, 2005 at 12:56 am #

Wow, I hope none of you have a shirt that someone else doesnt like because I can guarantee that you can not please every one, so the hell with pleaseing everyone and were what you want! As long as you arent seriously hanging out all over the place then wear it! If she likes the shirt then who cares, you arent wearing so dont worry! Im glad kelly doesnt look anorexic either, sorry but we need more girls that are alittle more average looking to get rid of this self consciousness America has.

  21. Kim June 23, 2005 at 12:56 am #

Do you think Kelly Clarkson herself cares? No… if you have nothing better to do than sit here and hate on such a BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED girl, then you need to find your way out of the computer room! She is TINY in real life, you wouldn’t believe it! She isn’t annorexic tiny, but she is SHORT and SKINNY… she has a very normal body! I, in fact, enjoy seeing her stomach! It’s very cute, and as for her wardrobe… SHE CAN DO WHAT SHE WANTS! Way to go, Kelly!

  22. Stephanie June 23, 2005 at 1:03 am #

Kelly is her own person, and that’s why I love her so much.

“If people tell me to get skinny, I’m most likely going to get fat to piss them off” ~Kelly Clarkson

    ^’Nuff said.

  23. Megan June 23, 2005 at 1:06 am #

Ok sorry to rain on ya’ll parade but this is what a normal, healthy person SHOULD look like. If you wanna look at a stick go look at Lindsey Lohan.

  24. cheertech June 23, 2005 at 6:19 am #

so who is this “monolo” ? and does HE have a six pack???? kelly’s sexy!!!! and thanks for the publicity! free publicity is always nice!

  25. Holly June 23, 2005 at 8:34 am #

All i have to say is that Kelly reserpsents a normal women that has a normal healthy body…..this is what a person looks like without the use of a personal trainer and liposuction….but instead eating right and getting everyday excersise! … ahahahaha since when is wearing what you want a privilege and not a right??? hello wake up dude!….and yeah what do u think you were gunna acomplish by posting this….showing the public what a real women should look like and not all those ‘fake’ women out thier like lohan, paris, nicole, etc. but whatever i wasted enough time posting on this thing!

  26. Anonymous June 23, 2005 at 10:07 am #

she is fine just the way she is

  27. Jessica June 23, 2005 at 10:43 am #

I do not agree with the main post. Kelly Clarkson looks like a normal human being. She’s nowhere near fat or anything. I know this simply because I’ve seen her upclose wearing that exact outfit at a show. She has a normal body and has he right to show that off. What normal girl do you see that has a 6 pack unless they’re obsessed with the gym or starve themselves. People who post things like this are the reasons why so many teenage girls are starving themselves.

  28. Alejandro June 23, 2005 at 11:53 am #

What, would you like to see ANOTHER anorexic star? Do you prefer the Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff barely existant look? I don’t know about you, but I would like my woman to actually be healthy and happy in her own skin. You can clearly see the Lindsays and Taras of the world are neither healthy nor happy. Kelly is an amazing woman, who is not afraid to show her tummy. More power to her!

  29. Sarah June 23, 2005 at 12:01 pm #

Its really sad that people feel the need to try and bring people down, just because they are jealous. Kellys perfect, and monolo or hansolo whoever the hell, knows it. Watch her go!

  30. sandyg June 23, 2005 at 12:55 pm #

Poor Manolo! I didn’t really think you were criticizing Kelly so much as chastizing her stylist! She’s a pretty girl with a lovely voice, and whoever is helping her pick out her clothing needs to pay a little more attention!

  31. Elle June 23, 2005 at 1:04 pm #

Her REAL fans think Kelly is perfect the way she is.. I guess that is what makes us REAL fans.. we know she is a normal human person who isnt goign to lower her expectations to meet what some of you want her to meet. The angel of the picture is not very good.. maybe you should stand in the mirror and think of all the crap the people are saying about the way you look. Besides what girl really has a 6-pack?

  32. Alexandra June 23, 2005 at 1:11 pm #

Kelly is awesome. She is not heavy and everyone loves her for herself it shouldn’t matter what she looks like as long as she is confident. She has her own style. And i respect her 100% because of that. She is a sweet, caring person. and she is beautiful.

  33. 21stCenturyMom June 23, 2005 at 1:38 pm #

Her stomach is fine – she just needs the pants that fit!

  34. Sibyl June 23, 2005 at 2:42 pm #

First off, no matter how thin she is, she still looks like hell in this outfit. Just saying.

Second, I always feel a twinge of satisfaction when I see girls dressed like this, because I outweigh them by a good fifty or sixty pounds but they have belly rolls hanging out and I don’t. Pants that *fit* are a remarkable invention, as are shirts that go down to the hips.

Thirdly, the Manolo has touched on the area of much sensitivity for the modern woman, and should not attribute all of these comments to the Kelly Clarkson partisans. The women are very tired of being told that their pudgy parts are unsightly, and will react accordingly.

  35. Aurelia June 23, 2005 at 2:49 pm #

Kelly Clarkson = crap outfit + crappier songs + way-too-tight pants + bad posture

  36. Ann Marie June 23, 2005 at 2:52 pm #

I think so many are missing the point, it’s not that she’s fat, she’s wearing unflattering clothing. Even that belly would be just fine if she wasn’t wearing sausage casing beneath it. She needs to show off her curves with something sexy and flattering — not with something tight and ill fitting.

No one, NO ONE looks good in ill fitting clothing. Be it a stick insect with oversized clothing that hangs off of them, or a heavier person wearing sausage-casing, with all the bits oozing out where they can breathe.

  37. Anonymous June 23, 2005 at 3:50 pm #

Wow! I had no idea Kelly fans were so l-a-m-e! (Well, maybe I did). Either that or they just don’t understand the point of the original post. I have nothing against Kelly, except that she should try and at least get clothes that fit her.

  38. RJ June 23, 2005 at 6:38 pm #

I personally think it is so rude for someone to attempt to bring someone feels about themselves down for no reason. Who exactly earned the right to tell people how they should dress or if they need to develop a 6 pack? I personally, love Kelly Clarkson and yes I’m in her fan club, and we love Kelly because she is our down to earth American girl. We love how fan hasn’t changed who she is. I’m glad that she doesn’t care what people think of her because look at our starts now, Lindsay Lohan who has a eating disorder and then there is Mary-Kate Olsen who also has an eating problem. Perhaps, it is people, like this Manolo, are part of the problem because he is feeding this stereotype of how someone should look that is famous. And anonymous might say that Kelly fans are lame but everyone has fans and Kelly is no different. She is a great girl and should continue to be herself because that sets her apart from everyone else that is famous!!!

  39. Catherine June 23, 2005 at 6:57 pm #

I personally see nothing wrong with the outfit or her stomach. Normally, I am the first person to notice if someone has a “hangover”, but this just isn’t the case here. Kelly is simply a beautifuly curvy (yet fit) woman. Not everyone has the same taste in clothing…it’s one of the ways we express our individuality. Kelly has a unique style. And as for Kelly fans being lame…I am in Kelly’s fanclub and I perfectly understood your first comment. I just DO NOT agree w/ it. I once had a stomach just like Kelly’s (before children) and Iwas extremely proud of it and I didn’t do too badly w/ the guys if I do say so myself! And as fr as I’ve seen the guys that usually put these grossly starved women on a pedestal are dorks, losers, or drug addicts. My husband would rather see me healthy than brittle looking.

  40. amanda June 23, 2005 at 8:17 pm #

I was standing up against the stage during one of her concerts, rested my elbows on the stage itself, and she came and stood right in front of me many times. I could reach out and touch her feet… the point is when you’re that close to her and her belly, you can see how utterly TINY she is!! she’s seriously the most itty bitty little person, including the tummy. She’s so petite, you have no idea til you see her standing in front of you. I’m 5’9 and 135 lbs and next to her I feel like a fat gigantic monster! I know her stomach isn’t all muscular, but trust me, its not fat either. She jumped around and not an inch jiggled or moved, and I was close enough to see if it did!!!!!

  41. Tori June 23, 2005 at 9:25 pm #

I respect Manolos’s opinion. But Kelly is thin. And she is awesome and beautiful no matter what. If she were 800 pounds i wouldnt care. Just as long as she stays true and a bright, lovely person she is

  42. me June 23, 2005 at 9:53 pm #

While I would not say I am a super-fan of Kelly Clarkson (my daughter is), I have to say she is no where near overweight. The outfit is not the best I’ve seen Miss Clarkson in, but oh well. I was reading in a magazine in a doctor’s office and there was an article on her. She said “You don’t have to be 100 pound to be beautiful.” and I completely agree with that. She’s showing that you don’t have to be bone thin to look good. I am glad that my daughter adores and admires Kelly. She is a very good role model. She’s saying that it’s okay to have a little curves. I’m so glad that Kelly is not bone thin like Paris Hilton or Tara Reid. I’m so glad that Kelly does not wear tube tops, hoochie shorts, and bikins in her videos like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson. She’s a normal girl with a normal body. I respect her for that.

  43. Mrs. Hasselhoff June 23, 2005 at 10:10 pm #

How many of you little girls that are defending Ms. Clarkson’s clothing choice wore shirts just like it today?

How many of you pretend that you, too, have no flab blossoming beyond the tops of your trousers?

I was at the mall tonight. I saw dozens of teens wearing clothing that didn’t fit. I saw crevices I didn’t want to see. And I saw clothing that certainly was causing chafing. Most of these girls appeared fat only because they wore clothing that was too small.

Manolo isn’t calling Ms. Clarkson fat. He is saying she made a bad choice with this outfit. He is saying she could have looked better. Pants that fit properly would make her look as slender as many of you claim to have witnessed. Kelly needs a new stylist … one that isn’t afraid to say, “no” when a bad outfit is selected by the client.

Finally, this is Manolo’s blog. He gets his say and thousands read it daily. He gets written about in big city newspapers. Why? Because he is superfantastic and he wants us all reach our fashion potential.

  44. Shannon June 23, 2005 at 10:44 pm #

If you read Manolo’s message again you will see, that he doesnt seem to be talking about her ‘outfit’ as all you claim to say he is…it seems to me he is talking about her weight “she must learn that the public baring of the belly it is the privilege, not the right.” Your messed up! It is a right not a privilege! That message is CRYSTAL CLEAR that he isnt talkin about her outfit at all but her belly instead. That picture she is leaned over and it is called “SKIN” say it with me people everyones got skin! So quit picking on the only TALENTED singer left out there in her age group that can actualy sing and isnt a fake! You people have no lives talking about someones “ghastly” outfit or their weight, and if your thinking well your doing the same thing, this is the first message ive ever writtin in this blog or any blog for that matter. I am a proud Kelly Clarkson fan which is the only reason why im replying to this EXSTREMLY STUPID AND POINTLESS blog. You are are obviously jealous, so look in the mirror and then talk and put down this beautiful, confident, talented and ONLY GOOD ROLE MODEL out there! Why dont you try wasting your time on some other celebrity who deserves to be put down, because Kelly certainly doesnt deserve this…she has done more good in the world then any of you haters could ever even dream of! JEALOUS, JEALOUS, JEALOUS….keep dreaming!
    LOVE YOU KELLY :)

  45. Aurelia June 23, 2005 at 11:43 pm #

    Manolo, you rock.
    Kelly fans, you scary.

  46. A 15 year old who's tired of being judged June 24, 2005 at 12:01 am #

How absurd we all are that we spend our time chastising other people over the internet? The only reason for my post is to defend teenage girls EVERYWHERE.

Mrs. Hasselhoff and everyone else who believes in similar fashion, certainly teen girls wear ill fitting clothing. I see it every single day at school. I’m sure I probably do it too. The point though, is that you probably do it as well. No one is perfect. I’m so frustrated with people making comments about teens these days. Do you want to know the truth about us? Some teens spend their free time running campaigns to find a cure for aids. Some teens spend their time on community youth commitees to educate the people around them. Some teens learn american sign language to communicate with the two deaf kids at their school. Some teens spend more time writing poetry or painting then they do picking out their clothing. Just like you, we have something deeper we want people to look at. Even the girls who go out flaunting their bodies, pretty or not, aren’t just asking for people to look at what’s on the outside. It’s a basic rule of human nature to judge what you see, but as adults, you should have learned to look past that by now.

We all have flaws, there’s no reason to focus on them. Forget the fact that you may not like Kelly’s clothes, body, or music, and look at the impact she’s making. She doesn’t starve herself and exclaim so proudly. She is a normal person who makes people feel comfortable in their own bodies. I wish people would take that into account before freaking out that her stomach doesn’t look perfect in that single picture.

I applaud Manolo for writing for big newspapers, that’s what I hope to do in the future. But you have to understand, his comments are blunt and to the point but go no further to avoid offending the character of the person and not just their outfit or body. Maybe you all should take that into account before exclaiming disgust.

  47. Kaley June 24, 2005 at 1:17 am #

First of all, does it really matter?
Second, who the hell are you to judge?
Third of all, leave her alone, what has she ever done to you?

  48. Truc June 24, 2005 at 9:07 am #

Oy. I’m more bothered by her hair and makeup.

  49. VeddyVeddyBadMan June 24, 2005 at 10:03 am #

Which Kelly fan site directed all you people here, anyway?

It’s pretty annoying when you get people dropping in on a blog community who don’t understand the personalities and the purpose of the blog. Then they go ballistic, posting things that only serve to make the regular posters defensive and aggravated. Believe me, girls, you’re not winning any converts by continuing your diatrabes. Go back whence you came.
