Surprised to see the Manolo loves the Dwight Yoakam. I too love the Dwight.

Perhaps one day the Manolo will share with us views of the music and shoes and boots of the greatest living country music performer, Merle Haggard, my all time favorite. After all, the Merle once sang “Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear … .” To say nothing of “My Own Kind of Hat”. I eagerly await the Manolo’s musings on this great American.

The Deadwood is to die for - for many reasons. Language, the palpable, sensual scenery, the excellent character development. It’s like watching “Out of Africa” but with grit, mud and sawdust stuck between your teeth. You can almost smell it. The second season only gets better - and if you can watch it in HD - do so. Costuming is spectacular; check out the underlying fabrics as well as the styling. And the boots - ohhhhh, the boots.

Glad you found this show, as it sets a new standard for broadcast entertainment IMHO.

It is the language that I love the most about Deadwood. The contrast between the almost Shakespearean East Coast dialog and the abrupt and rough West coast swearing. The Manolo understand language and he will die a thousand little deaths when he finishes the first season and realizes that he will have to wait until the second season is available!!!

Ah! I feel so in tune with The Manolo this week! I am reading Devil in the White City, just put Assasination Vacation on my Amazon wish a few days ago, and was just cursing that we are down to the last episode of Deadwood, a profane but super fantastic show. Manolo, you will enjoy the second-to-last episode of the second season when that arrives on DVD; there was much discussion of superstitions surrounding footwear and the donning of new boots for funerals. Also, season two features the addition of a higher class of hooker and many wealthier townsfolk, so the fashions are upgraded a bit. There’s a fashion section on HBO’s Deadwood sight that you might enjoy.

Ah, the Manolo, you too can be called a “discriminating omnivore”.

I personally enjoyed Devil in the White City when I read it a few years back, if only because it was not the dry boring history. There was not a true connection between the fair and the killings, but it is a chilling portrait of a psychotic opportunist who presages some of the most heinous killers of our time. I felt that it was good that the killings did not come to light during the Fair as they would have overshadowed its huge achievement.

I am contemplating Assassination Vacation and would like to hear what you have to say on that.

I’d be curious to know your thoughts of Devil in the White City. I thought it was very uneven and ultimately didn’t succeed in its goal of marrying the World Fair to the serial killings. Sadly, the serial killings were far more interesting…

The Manolo is going to love the Deadwood. The Ian McShane is the genius bad man of all time. I wish I could see the Deadwood for the first time again.
