I suggest that the Manolo not limit himself to The Closing of the Western Mind, based on the Amazon blurb and the self-congratulatory self-review by the author. Take a look also at Christianity and Classical Culture: A Study of Thought and Action from Augustus to Augustine by Charles Norris Cochrane. The story is one of mutual conflict and dialogue, and far from any mere "closing" of rationality, we see the faith-like elements of classical philosophy and the way that trinitarian Christianity resolved various philosophical problems. The people of those days were every bit as smart as we are, and were not gullible and did not abandon rationality when they adopted Christianity.

True! I am always impressed by the scope of The Manolo's interests. It's no wonder that he chooses such apt cultural references for his photo commentary. What's next? The history of pastry-making or illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages? Doctor Octopus and Cosi Fan Tutti? High Noon or Blazing Saddles? One never knows!

Now, if only Chuck Close would do a giganto-portrait of Andre 3000, all of our wildest dreams will come true.
