And I thought the Pirate look was all over.

Were they wearing Puffy Shirts a la Seinfeld, as well?

    WTBBQF?

Ah- the first offerings from Lagerfeld’s new “Scaramouche” collection. Matching tri-cornered hats and snuffboxes will follow.

Heaven forfend!!! The Tia Nieve hopes the collection will not include the peg leg!

    Arrrr!

Yes, but the eye patch of was of the classic simplicity.

    (second try!)
Yes, but the eye patch of the Cristopher Plummer http://www.thegrandstandinc.com/images/8294.jpg was of the classic simplicity

Depth perception is just *so* last season.

  10. Elvira July 18, 2005 at 2:56 pm #

Is the Elvira the only one here who is completely creeped out by that photo? She can barely stand to look at it.

To The Baron–WTF is pretty self-explanatory. But would you please educate me on the BBQ part? Is it just for added emphasis, or is there some other additional meaning?

  12. The Scarlett July 18, 2005 at 3:17 pm #

Mimi, I found the meaning of WTFBBQ here. (In fact, if I don’t know what my 16-year old is talking about I check Urban Dictionary, stat.)

It seems that the ‘BBQ’ part is unnecessary … not unlike these couture eyepatches.

  13. Mme Dogma July 18, 2005 at 4:37 pm #

The last time the Mme Dogma saw this, it was being worn by the Janet Jackson at some event of super male aggressiveness. Which is more appalling, I cannot decide.

I can’t say that I have any problem with the frilly patches. Clearly they are for decoration for the show and not a product to be marketed. But, I am fond of the pirate chic, so my threshold of tolerance is higher for the useless eye accessories.

And speaking as a person with the most terrible of lazy eyes, a patch that looks pretty would be necessary for the model with the lazy eye, although this is not the case of course in the above photo.

Ack! Now I know what creepiness it reminds me of….

“Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.”

(In my profession there is a thing called “Computer Aided Design”. A long time ago I coined the phrase “Drug Aided Design” to explain the presence of monstrosities like the above. Nothing else quite seems to explain them.)

Fred the Fourth is a recent convert to the site of the Manolo. As a newcomer perhaps I should sit quietly with the hands folded and take in the superfantasticness of it all, but on occasion the Manolo, he surprises his adoring public with an item which, may I humbly suggest, belongs in the Gallery of the Horrors. I always don my welder’s mask before opening the Gallery of the Horrors, and so reduce my Opthamology bills.

Just in time for Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Finally the lazy eye I’ve had since birth is good for something…

  19. Zippy July 18, 2005 at 8:52 pm #

    What for?

  20. the Whine Mistress July 19, 2005 at 12:09 am #

The Elvira is not the only one creeped out by the photo – the Whine Mistress, she is also creeped out. These young ladies remind the Whine Mistress of the mutants, a la Total Recall, only slightly more fashionable. Also, although she prefers a full-bodied Cabernet, the Whine Mistress finds herself fighting to stifle the urge to shout, “why is the rum gone?”

While the first obvious source for this it lingering Pirate chic, you’ll find that this also has roots in Japanese fetish fashion. The heavy ruffles and heart shapes are highly used in gothic lolita, and the use of ornate bandages and medical props are part of the ‘broken doll’ look as well. I think…

The eyepatch shown is pretty gaudy but when you are blind in one eye from loss of the retina and the eye has turned white ( and ugly) you are looking for a cover that would look”"cute” ,”classy” or anything other than like a pirate, so you can go along with the rest of world. It isn’t easy being blind.
