I looked far and wide for leather Rod Laver's. The mesh ones get dirty way too fast. I've looked in every sneaker store in Manhattan and Queens. The all black ones don't fit right, somethign about the way they treat the leather. Rod Laver's in leather are the greatest shoe in the world, I may have to buy 5 pairs right now, just to be safe.

Humph.

The eventual dirtiness of the Lavers is their appeal. Like an old pair of Chucks. This especially looks good with a pair of worn jeans.

PF Flyers, though, are still my forgotten favorite. In part because they are a little harder to find in the stores and really Chucks were just a down market copy of the Flyers anyway.

It seems that the Puma Clydes that are coming back are only a limited edition thing. I think a fairly suitable substitute is the <a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/r365cy63y5LNRTTROSLQMQUTQN?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zappos.com%2Fn%2Fp%2Fdp%2F5875834%2Fc%2F151.html" target="_blank" >Puma Majesty Lows</a>.

I agree with the Nannah above -- are not the Stan Smiths an acceptable substitute for the Rod Lavers? May I also suggest the K-Swiss, still widely available in all white leather?

I worked in a sporting goods store back in the early Seventies and had the opportunity to purchase a pair of both the gold and the green suede at next to nothing. Very stylish, especially with the old school tube socks with complementary colored stripes at the top (worn with a second, lower cut pair). Not nearly as comfortable on the court as the classic white with black stripes Adidas, though.

What is with the Laver high-tops? Laver was a TENNIS player.
