It is not to be wondered at, as (back in the mists of the time) one of the functions of the maids of the bride was to confuse and confound (not to mention upset) any attempts by a rival suitor to kidnap the bride. (For the small comfort that it is, La BellaDonna is suitably horrified at the prospect of the elbows on the table, the checkered prints with stripes, and the flip-flops (!) at the White House.) I believe the Commandment of the White Shoe is one of those "lines in the sand" rules that is most important. While it is indeed meaningless and petty, if we do not respect these rules of the petty, then what is next? Flip flops at the White House? Elbows on the table? Checkered prints with stripes? It will never stop! It will someday lead to the horrific sight of the maids of the brides in white. I am not in the agreement with the Superfantastic One.
