The Gallery of the Horrors: The Sweat
Manolo says, the Manolo he has finally added the new horror to the Gallery of the Horrors, the Sweat from the Steve Madden.
Manolo says, here you see one of the more lamentable fashion statements of this the new millenium, the Steve Madden’s “Sweat”.
Yes, it is named, the Sweat. Most descriptive, no?
Does the name and the shoe not conjure up the mental image of the three-hundred pound man-child, shuffling down the street in the filthy pajamas, clutching at the half masticated piece of the pizza?
Yet, what is most unaccountable is that this shoe it is intended as the stylish casual shoe for the young womens, and indeed the Manolo he has on more than one of the occasions seen this shoe on the foot of the otherwise sane seeming person. Why? Why would someone wear the shoe that looks like the slipper that belongs on the foot of the mental patient?
Why? Why? Why?

Can’t help you, my friend. I’m a knitter. I love knitting. I wear otherwise ill-advised knitted objects, and love them. But this.. I just can’t imagine. I wouldn’t even wear them in the house, and considering the status of my current house sloppers (er, that was a typo, but so appropriate), that is saying quite a lot.
Even so: as we speak, somewhere out there a crazed knitter is re-creating that pattern out of sheer joy. For serious.

It appears that the Steve Madden is in reality an 80 year old woman who lives alone with 23 cats.
Amy 19 years ago
I’m a knitter too, and these are a travesty. But I guess they fit in with some of the knitting world’s more heinous crimes. Unfortunately, there are already plenty of those–we didn’t need more, Mr. MaddeN!

for shame! i almost purchased a pair of those in a haze of comfort-lust. Truth be told, they are neither comfortable nor stylish. Just plain silly.
Rox 19 years ago
They look like socks. Platform socks. No no, platform clogs made od socks.
jane 19 years ago
i think they are creative and fun and funky.
VeddyVeddyBadAng 19 years ago
No, Rox, “platform socks” works just great for me. VERY funny.
They look like they would stretch out after about 10 minutes of walking, to the point where they would fall off the foot completely and become lost in the street. Problem solved!

My 23 year old daughter bought a pair of these just this weekend. I thought they were slippers but she assured me they were shoes. Even though we wear the same size, these will not be among those I borrow from her…
Suma 19 years ago
Let it be known that Shoebuy would never, ever stock shoes as hideous as these. Yes, we do carry Steve Madden, but no, we are choosy in which ones we sell.
PS: How about the Manolo adding our wonderful blog to his blogroll, hmm? We would appreciate it very much. :)

These are the kind of shoes worn by the heavy, militantly grey woman that wears her elastic-waisted pants pulled up to her armpits. And, from the title, you know exatly how that woman smells.

I kinda like them… I like out-of context fabrications. Not so sure I’d buy them, though. They don’t seem very versatile. I’ve seen girls wearing them with jeans… I think maybe they’d go with a brown leather skirt and a big cowl sweater.

These shoes are absoutely hideous. I’ve seen a girl around my college campus wearing a dirty pink pair. Disgusting.

Eeeeekkkkk!!! The aliens have truly landed! And they brought their footwear with them…

The Manolo asks why would someone wear these “slipper shoes” out in public? I’ve seen (yes, recently) college twenty-somethings in slippers and flannel pajama bottoms in the stores of the grocery. They were swaggering about and thought their fashion statement was oh-so-chic because everybody was looking at their feet. Even my five year old daughter thought it was stupid. These attrocities by Steve Madden would fit their bad fashion sense.

How grateful I am to the Manolo when he gives us these early warnings of the End Times…

Should you LIKE the shock (shoe/sock) travesty of the knitted type from the Steve Madden (shame, shame…), they have a less expensive (most likely) version at the store of the cheap – PayLess! Just saw them in there this afternoon. I like my feets warm, but not in a broiler oven of shock.
Joan 19 years ago
Bridget, we’ve all seen those unfortunates who think that wearing pajamas and slippers out and about is the height of fashion. I just can’t understand why an otherwise respectable designer would want to encourage them!
I, too, am a knitter, but even the knitty characteristic of these “shoes” saves them! There is no excuse!
JayKay 19 years ago
My best friend in college had a pair of shoes that were very similar to the ones pictured above. We lovingly referred to them as “the Taco Bell Shoes” beacuse they were *only* suitable to wear in that kind of environment.
OOOH! That gives me an idea for the Manolo’s essay contest! Thanks to the ugly Steve Madden shoes for the inspiration.

Pourquoi? Parce que! C’est vraiment la chaussure malheureusement.
Sharron 19 years ago
Steve Madden needs to sign up for the design classes at his nearest community college. I hope he can afford it after the people who buy these shoes come to their senses and sue him for making them look like vision-impared sheep farmers.

“The Sweat” aka “The Smell” aka “The 14-year-old boy Gym Shoe”
Alas one’s foot would create a damp warmth loved by the malodorous tinea.
But on a positive note, “The Sweat” wool would itch it as you walked!
ogma 19 years ago
The grandfater of ogma always said “the pigs sweat, the people perspire.” Fitting particularly when you see who would wear these.
Lance de Boyle 19 years ago
I think they would be quite useful in the kitchen. Just step in a bucket of Spic and Span (or Mister Clean if you prefer) and slosh around, mopping the floor as you go.

I’m rarely left with the lack of the speech.. But these shoes, they distress me and bring pain to my eyes. Steve Madden needs to stop with the taking of the substances.
VeddyVeddyBadAng 19 years ago
Oh no! They are indeed a trend!
ShannonShoe 19 years ago
One need not look further than the slogan of the Steve Madden to understand how he could come up with a “shoe” like the horrible SWEAT:
The hippest shoes don’t come from Paris or Milan…they’re imported straight from Long Island City — Steve
enough said…
Diva Leigh 19 years ago
The VeddyVeddyBadAng has indeed uncovered a devious plot! And curiously, this footwear is described as being “the cutest clog you’ll see this fall.” I apparently completely misunderstand the definition of “cutest.” “Cute clog” is an oxymoron even when it isn’t being used to decribe this monstosity.

Aren’t these the shoes worn by Vincent the Chin Gigante when he was wandering around the Village in his bathrobe?
Texasexile 19 years ago
I wonder how long one must wear those before becoming overwhelmed by the stench of the feets????
AskMom 19 years ago
AskMom would reflect that even the slack-jawed twinkie gummers of the world feel the need to wear shoes that truly express their style, their personality…….. The Steve Madden, he has performed the public service, sparing the clueless from being shoeless!
judi 19 years ago
Those shoes are just soooo ugly, they’re cute. Not that I’d be caught dead, or even drunk, in them. But the Scholl’s ones are kinda neat. I’d probably go for a Missoni version, on sale of course.
Got to go- now I know what I’m knitting for all my friends for their holiday presents…

Macy’s obviously has a buyer with unfortunate taste: take a look at some of the other shoes listed under the ‘Fall Trends’ link.
Lime green Frye boots. Pastel-pink Timberland hikers with fold over tops . Uber-shiney golden motorcycle boots. thehref=”http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=167604&CategoryID=19477″> Hiawatha lace-up moccasins with a stiletto heel, done by Jlo.
Obviously, someone has been doing the drugs. The bad drugs.
jrochest 19 years ago
Oh dear, I really did futz up that last link — I’m sorry. But, given what the boots look it, perhaps it’s just as well.
Esther 19 years ago
I look at these shoes, and all I can imagine are the overly hot and sweaty feet. Ugh.
Oh, and while waiting in line at the cafeteria the other day, I spotted some poor woman wearing *pink* Timberland boots. That’s right, pink.
courtney 19 years ago
Those are just…HORRID
a 19 years ago
I would wear these with pink tights with even brighter pink leg warmers, a swishy gray sheer skirt, a white tank top, and a sheer black long sleeved slouchy off the shoulder shirt. Then I would take a picture and email it to http://www.gofugyourself.com.
All joking aside, I live in Wisconsin. Not NY or LA or Milan. So perhaps that is why I am not offended by these shoes.

I was in Target last night, looking for shoelaces, I walked around the corner, and there they were. Not only is Madden making them, buy they’ve already filtered down to your local Target. Stop the madness!
taryn nicole 16 years ago
stop making fun of these shoes! They dont look bad with a good pair of jeans and they are comfortable to wear all day. Im constantly on the move and these shoes are perfect to wear all day.

I agree with Nicole.
What can appears ugly or unsuited in certain circumstances fit very well in others.
It is also a question of personal taste.
Let us accept diversity
