What the Manolo Is…

Manolo says, let us see what the Manolo is…

Reading…

Watching…

Reading…

Listening to…

The Manolo he has not yet seen the movie Serenity, however he is very much enjoying the Firefly series. Yes, the plots they are somewhat lame, and the budget it is low, and there are the giant gaps in the logic, but the concept of using the language and the tropes of the western in the modern space opera, it is somewhat original and very well executed. And so, ultimately, it is fun.

  1. Ice Scribe Says:

The Joss Whedon, he is very good with the dialogue, no?

  2. Amy Says:

Firefly is great fun, as is Serenity. Be sure to watch for the Jayne Cobb knitted hat, knit by his elderly mother. Knitters with more enthusiasm than taste (that would be me) all made those hats to wear to the movie.

  3. Gigolo Kitty Says:

Both the series and movie deserve a bigger audience. The Manolo, he has seen Buffy, right?

  4. Mike Says:

My wife made a Jayne Cobb hat for a friend of ours.

“…but the concept of using the language and the tropes of the western in the modern space opera, it is somewhat original and very well executed.”

This concept is not ’somewhat original’ at all! The cowboy-hero (and as a Texan I am familiar with the archetype) has crossed from westerns to many other genres:

“An offshoot of the western genre is the “post-apocalyptic” western, in which a future society, struggling to rebuild after a major catastrophe, is portrayed in a manner very similar to the 19th century frontier. Examples include The Postman and the “Mad Max” series, and the computer game Fallout.”

“Many elements of space travel series and films borrow extensively from the conventions of the western genre. Peter Hyams’ Outland transferred the plot of High Noon to interstellar space. Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek series, once described his vision for the show as “Wagon Train to the stars”. More recently, the space opera series Firefly used an explicitly western theme for its portrayal of frontier worlds.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_%28genre%29

“And so, ultimately, it is fun.” I wouldn’t bother seeing the movie in theaters, I didn’t find it worth the ticket price. If you are a fan of the television series, you may think otherwise. Regardless, long live the cowboy…in whatever genre he appears!

    howdy there pardners,

if the manolo would like to further pursue the futuristic cowboy genre, might i suggest the following wikipedia entry:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction_Western

it’s not ALL cowboys in space, but they’ve got a nice listing. Cowboy Bebop is at the top of the anime category here, and with good reason!

    see you later, space cowboy….

  7. M Says:

ha, then i re-read Emliy’s post above and see she was pointing in much the same direction. ‘doh.

  8. ery Says:

Oh, now I’m dying for Manolo’s opinion of Inara’s lush, beautiful wardrobe.

  9. toad Says:

I found the movie well worth the price. Some of the audience had apparently never seen the “Firefly Series” and were suprised indeed by dialog and some of the heros actions, they gave me much amusment.
The River character definitely needs to consult with the Manolo for the proper shoes. Also I will be very careful around a ballet dancer if I run into one.

  10. FunnyStrange.com Says:

the manolo he invented the shoe blog

The Manolo Shoe Blog is deranged. Be sure to check out the Gallery of the Horrors. “Why? Why would someone wear the shoe that looks like the slipper that belongs on the foot of the mental patient?”…

  11. sarah Says:

the sarah is a big, big fan of Firefly and Serenity, and so is pleased that the Manolo is watching.

by the way, did i miss the big announcement about a new relationship and more exposure for the Manolo and the shoe blog in this, the second year of super fantasticness?

  12. Atomic Bombshell Says:

That is SO HOT… You have excellent taste in way more than just shoes! :D

  13. Ailine Says:

    Yay Manolo!

Please, go see the movie once you finish the series. Totally worth it, if only because at least one of the storylines gets a worthy wrap-up.

Stupid Fox - if they hadn’t cancelled, this would have been the beginning of the 4th season.

  14. jobert Says:

The Manolo is trly right. Firefly truly ummm… rocks! I have been a fan of Firefly for over a month now but alas! The movie Serenity is scheduled to be shown here in the Philippines early next year. The series hasn’t even been shown also so the distributors are wary on unleashing a truly great sci-fi story here in our shores.

  15. nat Says:

I just watched the entire Firefly series last weekend. Ohhh, it is SUBLIME! Serenity, here I come!

  16. desertwind Says:

Ah, and the actors are very good looking!

  18. Not the manolo Says:

the Jayne, he is the hunky lump of the testosterone!

  19. Verity Kindle Says:

Oh, how I love The Jayne. And Captain Tightpants. I adore “Firefly” and “Serenity”, I’ll probably be arrested at some point while digging through Joss Whedon’s garbage cans. sigh of happiness. minimum-security prison, here I come.
