People — he was wearing the hat for a photo opp to publicize the precise incongruity his uncharacteristic headgear represents: a country music event in New York City. He was not affecting to be a Texan, ride the range, etc. It is a situation that calls for the sense of the humor, not of the umbrage.

The Bloody Munchkin has to disaggree with the Jenzilla. As a former New Mexican, I have seen my fair share of “the formal cowboy hats” and think they look just right for the cowboy who knows how to wear them. A nice formal, steamed and formed black felt can be the most dapper accessory on the man on the right occasion. But The Bloody Munchkin is the daughter of a man who wore the formal cowboy hats, so The Bloody Munchkin is a bit biased….

The tinka is not proud of the Bloomberg as far as the dorky hat goes. No slight was intended to all the refined, Manolo-reading cowboys and cowgirls out there.

But the Bloomberg appears be smart, serious about his job, and not evil.
He (and any other such elected officials) could wear a tutu and a cowboy hat simultaneously as far as the tinka is concerned. Dorky is just fine!!!

To my mind, the rakish angle works best for the fun hats: the straw beach hat, baseball cap, the fedora, the motorcycle cap (think Marlon Brando). The practical hats of the hardworking cowboys, soldiers, construction workers, etc. are better worn at a sensible angle to keep the sun, rain and debris off their heads. Even my father, who can wear a cowboy hat without it looking like a costume, prefers the baseball cap now that he lives in the suburbs and no longer rides horses.

Another Texan confirming Jenzilla’s take on it… the only thing that I find more absurd than the “fancy dress cowboy hats” (especially when improperly fitted and/or worn at a “cocky” angle like that) are the matching fancy dress cowboy boots, particularly on men - turquoise blue with faux “gemstones” glued on, bright yellow or orange, red/white/blue. ::shudder:: I should take my camera and go to the club this weekend… you wouldn’t BELIEVE some of the boots these guys wear in public.

Now, a REAL cowboy wearing the REAL working gear… yum. Even if — hell, especially if he’s dusty and a bit sweaty… YUM.

In this Texan’s opinion: A cowboy hat is a working hat, and therefore is only appropriate in working situations. It cannot be worn in any formal or dress capacity whatsoever, any more than flip flops can be. Even real cowboys look ridiculous in fancy dress cowboy hats.

To add to the absurdity, the hat doesn’t appear to fit, or else he just has no clue how to place it on his head. Really, New Yorkers, there’s no cause to be proud that your mayor is so entirely clueless and yet attempted to wear it anyway. ;)

The Norma thinks the tinka is correct. Were a mayor of New York ever to look too comfortable in the hat of the cowboys, his constituents would ride him out of Manhattan on the rail, and I do not refer to the A train. To the Norma, he looks slightly silly, but aware of the fact and good-natured about it, which is on balance not such a bad thing. And the Norma is not a Republican, so her opinion is relatively unbiased.

Bloomie does look ridiculous but I’m sure this was part of some press conference or event to promote the fact that the Country Music Awards were being held in NYC, maybe for the first time. Otherwise you’d never see him in a cowboy hat - not his stye and frankly, that look is not going to win votes from many New Yorkers - too red state. It should be noted, however, that one of his daughters is a champion equestrian.
