Manolo the Columnist

Manolo says, the Manolo’s most recent column for the Express of the Washington Post it is now available for the downloading at their website. Today’s question it is shoes suitable for the interview for the job.

Dear Manolo,

I have a job interview soon, and I’ve selected a lovely navy pinstripe suit with a pencil skirt to wear. I’ve found a pair of black slingbacks that go with it, but my question is, is it appropriate to wear slingbacks to an interview? Also, can I wear black shoes with a navy suit?

K.

Manolo says, black shoes with the navy suit? Yes!

As for the the slingbacks, they are the compromise between the full pump and the too-sexy-and-frivolous-for-the-interview mule, and because of this, the answer it is the qualified maybe.

If your job interview it is with the art gallery, or the house of publishing, or one of the other creative industries, then the slingback, it is indeed most appropriate, as one would wish to display some indication of mild relaxation.

However, if your interview it is for the job in the house of investment banking, or the office of the federal prosecutor, then perhaps it would be best to appear as conservative as possible, so as not to frighten the natives with your wanton display of the heel skin.

Of the course, either way, you still would wish your shoes to be very attractive, and so the Manolo he would suggest that you look for the black pump.

But, you do not yet have the job, and you are not made of the moneys, and so you need the shoe at the reasonable price. Thus, the Manolo he would recommend to you the Destiny 2 from the Circa by the Joan and the David.

Not only does it have the name of great portent, but it is both stylish and attractively priced.

The Manolo he asks his many internet friends, should the Manolo’s column be syndicated in more of the newspapers? Perhaps this it is something he should persue.

  1. The Charlotte Allen Says:

Manolo! Of course you ought to syndicate it! What a no-brainer!

  2. Phyllis Says:

Manolo - The Boston Globe has a new Thursday section called Style & Arts and I think your column would be a great fit!….Pun intended :-D

  3. Sara Says:

    In a word:

    YES.

  4. Joyce Says:

Manolo, the Chicago Tribune is in desperate need of your wit and sensibility! Desperate! Very desperate! If the Trib takes you, I might forgive the silliness of their serious columnists, like The Kass and The Zorn.

Syndication will spread the wisdom of the Manolo–and the happiness it brings! And most likely, you will help the newspaper business in this time of flagging sales and diminishing readership.

  5. Sandy Says:

Yes, yes, yes. And those junior, tabloid-size, commuter-ready versions of big city papers (much as the relationship between The Express and The Post of the Washington) seem to be popping up everywhere and would be ideally suited to such hip, witty fare as yours.

  6. Annalucia Says:

The Annalucia she reads the Wall Street Journal, and she thinks the Manolo would fit nicely into either the Friday (Weekend Journal) or Saturday (Pursuits) section. She personally would vote for Weekend Journal, so that the column could run directly opposite “Catalogue Critic” and perhaps in company with the witty and civilized wine writers.

Oh - somewhat off topic but the Annalucia has just ordered her first pair of shoes from the Zappos today, and for this she must thank the Manolo, because had it not been for his site she would never have heard of this cornucopia of shoeness. Moltissime grazie.

    Go for it, dear Manolo!

I guess that — like the syndicated political columnists and the cartoon strippers — you just approach one of the syndicates with a passle (passle?) of columns that illustrate your wonderful work.

  8. Texasexile Says:

Manolo - the wit and wisdom of your blog should be disseminated to as many people as possible. All must be given the opportunity to become superfantastic!

  9. betsy Says:

I wish that Manolo’s wisdom was in the regular Washington Post. Which, incidentally, syndicated material all over the country.

Also, the various City Papers largely lack fashion coverage. You could share pages with the fabulous Rob Breszney! I wonder how one would go about getting that deal?

  10. e Says:

Of course you should syndicate in more newspapers. Think of all the internet friends you could make, and think of all the opportunities to help shoe-bereft girls! Share the wealth of your knowledge, I implore you!

  11. Lori Says:

The people of the rural West and Midwest have the superfantastic hearts, but haven’t had the superfantastic fashion advice. This should change!

  12. annie Says:

The Las Vegas Review Journal desperately needs you!

  13. twistygirl Says:

Yes, wonderful Manolo needs to be in syndication!!! The message of the good shoes needs to be spread out far and wide, from the big cities to the cornfields, from the Internet to the people with no computer, everybody needs to know how to be superfabulous!

  14. alba Says:

Resoundingly yes, and you should hire me, the alba, as your superfantastic proofreader who would commence by advising with all sweetness that the Manolo, he must either pursue or peruse this possibility, but not both. At least not in the same word.

  15. Joan Says:

Manolo, Angela Hoy at Writer’s Weekly has an e-book on becoming a syndicated columnist. It is for very little money, and it gives you a good feel for the steps to take. You’re way ahead of the game if you wish to syndicate, since you already have clips of your published columns.

I think the world would benefit from your column’s syndication. There are hundreds of papers out there, so there’s a possibility of some nice cha-ching in it for you, too. I wish you the best of luck!

  16. tbone Says:

Manolo - the Midwestern peoples would love the syndicated manolo and his sage advice!

  17. batmom Says:

I, too, would love to see the Manolo syndicated, particularly here in Canada. Reach for the stars, Maestro.

I do have three words of advice for the woman wanting to wear black shoes with a navy suit: sheer nightshade hose. Nightshade does a wonderful job of transitioning the legs from the navy of the suit to the black of the shoes.

  18. Vanderleun Says:

Yes, the Manolo should be the customized and syndicated Manolo. The Manolo also should having be the book deal and associated items.

But the Manolo, should he be wanting these things, must have the Agent of the Manolo.

I have some experience with this finding of the agent and if the Manolo would like more to know he is having my address email.

  19. kate q Says:

There are many many people who do not read the internet who could very much use the sensible, nonpartisan fashion advice that the Manolo delivers so charmingly.

Like formal manners, instruction in ‘what to wear, when’ has been abolished in favor of ‘doing one’s own thing.’ A laudable ideal; but it has had, as so many such things do, unintended consequences: at least two generations now have not learned how to dress themselves appropriately, and are forced, in their insecurity, to copy what they see in the media, or at the mall — or simply to guess. Which leads to such things as flip-flops at the White House, and is a painful situation for the participants as well as for the observers.

Such a foothold as the Manolo could provide would be delightful, and appreciated.
