Project Runway 2, Week 7
Manolo says, this episode it was the great improvement over the previous episode, the one with the hideous skaters costumes.
The theme for the show, the inspiration, it is the excellent one, as it gives us the chance to see how the designers they think about this important topic.
First, however, we get to see how the Manolo’s old friend, the Michael Kors searches for the inspiration, and the result, the Doris Duke in Hawaii, it is not especially inspiring. This “inspiration” it yields what, the retro Hawaiian prints in the pastel colors! Very innovative, that.
Thank Goodness, says the Manolo, that at the least his inspiration it was not the Daisy Duke in Appalachia, or else we would have had to sit through the showing of the Michael Kors line of Hee Haw couture.
As for the designers of the Project Runway, many of their inspirations (street signs, graffitti, large African women in dashikis) they were equally hackneyed, something which the Michael Kors noted unironically at the final showdown.
And here the Manolo he must give the special props to the Andrae and the Daniel, not merely for the beautiful garments which they produced, but also for having the good eye to find the images which were unusual and inspiring. Like the Michael Kors, the Manolo he is now the “Full Dan Fan”. Also, more and more the Manolo he has come to love the crazy little flaming Andrae. Yes, he is wound one turn too tight, but at the bottom he has the sweet and kindly personality, and his talent, which literally found beauty in the gutter, it is muy fuerte indeed.
This episode it was also good because it gave us the Nick almost having the melting down, the Zulema getting her final reward, and the chastened and seriously subdued Santino, who does the dead perfect impersonation of the Tim Gunn, and who appears to have less and less talent as the series progresses. By the way, after watching the sage Tim Gunn go on and on about the deficiencies of the model Rachel (who is the “elongated marshmallow with the “gumby legs”) the Manolo he cannot but believe that the Zulema did exactly the right thing by taking the Tarah. That it did not help her, it is beside the point.
Finally, let the Manolo say that the Jay, who appeared last night as the judge, he is more amusing by himself, than all of the cuurent designers put together. The Manolo he is eagerly awaiting the Project Jay.

kara got one hell of a free pass last night!

Oh my, yes Kara did get off easy last night. I think Zulema’s more talented than Kara, but the fact that Z kept sending stuff down the runway that was half-finished did her in.
Santino should maybe look into a new career as an impressionist? Since design is obviously not his forte.
I love Daniel V. I want him to come design my clothes and sit on my couch and just make my life prettier. siiiiiiigh.

While I totally agree that Kara got off a bit easy- at least her dress looked finished and had good shape… Zulema’s dress looked so ill-fitting and unfinished. But I suppose in the end none of it will matter since it will be Daniel V, Andrae and Chloe/Nick in the final. Go Daniel V!!!!

Andrae has made the most amazing come back I think. From almost getting eliminated in the first episode with his meltdown to the Gutter Dress is quite a journey. I think his dress was more original than that of Dan V.

The judging last night was so close to being perfect (for the first time). The only problem being that Zulema’s terrible dress was slightly better than Kara’s terrible dress, which, being a plain black sheath, was not more impressive mearly for being finished.

I wanted to like Andrae’s more than I did. The design was lovely and the high-low concept was right up my alley, but in execution it seemed strangely shapeless and the cement grey did nothing for me.
Interestingly, this episode’s judging seemed the complete opposite of last week’s, where Emmett was criticized for his lack of vision. This week the more innovative was given the boot and the more conservative was saved. I think for both weeks, voting out either of the bottom two was defendable, but the inconsistency in judging standards is interesting.

I’m just so sad that that gorgeous model will most likely now get the boot because Zulema stole her. You have to admit her orignial model is not even close to the cat’s meow.

The most fun bit of the show was seeing The Gunn oh so bitchy. The only thing redeeming about Santino is his spot-on Gunn impersonation. The fact that he is acting a bit subdued is certainly a relief but I so want him gone. Poo ick! He annoys me too much. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! Love him.

I’m a Full Dan Fan myself. I’m sad that the yummy model Tarah is probably going down with the Zulema ship. I’m hoping that Daniel switches to Tarah, giving Nick the super fierce Rebecca.
Has anyone seen the bonus video of Santino doing an impression of Tim Gunn singing the Nine Inch Nails song ‘Closer?” If you haven’t click here.

Scarlett, I initially thought that too. But I realized that, next week, Daniel will be able to choose between Rebecca (his model) and Tarah (now Zulema’s ex-model). If he stays with Rebecca, Tarah will go home. If he switches to Tarah, that just means Rebecca will go home. End of story. Tarah is no longer Nick’s model; she is chained to the fate of Zulema. If he declined to pick either girl and switched to a different model, then that model’s designer would get Rebecca. He/she doesn’t get to pick. I can’t see him ditching Rebecca for any reason, and no matter what he does, other than choose Tarah for himself, it doesn’t seem as though it would save Tarah. Sad and complex. At least Nick appears to have adjusted to working with Rachel, but she certainly is not my favorite. Although I did feel sorry for her when Tim was giving his rundown. This girl has certainly had a tough season, starting with Zulema hanging her ass out to dry and winding up with that less-than-flattering summation.
Someone mentioned on a different site that Tarah has just landed a big contract with Maybelline. Good for her! And wasn’t it refreshing to hear from a couple of the models last night–they don’t just walk; they can talk!

I once saw the dress that Kara made. It was with my mother at a Moschino Cheap & Chic sample sale in 1991. I wouldn’t buy it then. I didn’t buy it now…..

Holy mother of pearl, the Scarlett’s link to Santino doing a Tim Gunn version of “Closer” is SO FUNNY that simple words cannot do it justice.
I howled with laughter. You. Must. Click. :D

Santino as Tim is quite hi-larious!
Can’t wait for Project Jay either, sadly, it is not available for the Tivo setting up yet!

Daniel’s orchid design was amazing, as was Andrae’s gutter water design. They were the only two (and maybe Chloe) who really had an inkling of how to interpret inspiration photos into fashion. I really enjoyed this episode.
For the Full Dan Fans among us, here’s a way to wear your support!
I’ve also made one for Nick, but I need ideas for Chloe and Andrae.
I’m not going to try to make a shirt for Santino…I’m hoping he’ll be off soon.
but with Blogging Project Runway talking about the next challenge offering immunity, I’m afraid someone like Kara or Santino will get immunity and that would mean either one of my favorite 4 will be out the week after!!!

OMG, you are so right, Diane, about the Tarah/Rebecca/Rachel situation. The only way that Nick could have gotten her back would have been if he had won the ‘Inspiration’ challenge. That right there should have been his inspiration!
I, too, heard about the Tarah/Maybelline contract. She and Rebecca were my favorite models this year. I’m sure Tarah will go very far but I hate to see her go.
BTW, did you notice that Nick had some bags on his form to account for Rachel’s booty?

Kara is proof of that old joke about the two guys running from the bear. You don’t have to beat the bear. You just have to beat the other guy.
