Stage Beauty had some serious flaws, but the DVD was worth the money. Listen to the talking heads in the Special Features and then watch the movie again, asking yourself this, in our age of metrosexuals, transsexuals, same-sex marriage, etc: What is it that makes a man a man? And what is it that makes a woman a woman? And does it matter?

Stage Beauty doesn't answer the questions, but it asks them beautifully (think of the Buckingham character).

I agree with Manolo about Stage Beauty. There was a serious disconnect in the plot development and the relationship between the characters. Oh, yeah - Claire Danes suckedt too.

Ayyyy! The Manolo MUST make the movie of the Charles II and the Nell Gwynn and all of Charles' other laahvers. Just think of the beautiful and delicate heels everyones will be wearing -- mens, included!

Is "Will in the World" a better read than href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0385511396/qid=1140546454/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-0124974-2394353?s=books&v=glance&n=283155">Shakespeare:

Ah yes! The Nell Gwyn and the Charles the Second, what a wonderful story it will be if it is done properly. And if the Manolo does write it, the Annalucia hopes that he will not forget the Nell's famous quip when her coach was surrounded by the screaming anti-Catholic mob: ``Calm yourselves, my good people; I am the Protestant whore.''

(The Annalucia is quoting here the Florence King from memory, but a version of this also appears in the biography of Charles II written by the Antonia Fraser. The Manolo will no doubt select the sharpest and pithiest version.)

La BellaDonna, she will be the first in line to see the Manolo's movie about the Charles II and the Nell Gwynn. And while the Stage Beauty, it may not have been the perfect movie, it was the beautiful movie, and there was much that La BellaDonna found moving, and she will be buying the DVD pronto, if not sooner. And her fingers kept twitching through the movie; she recognized the dress patterns from the splendid books of the Norah Waugh and the Janet Arnold!

*It is the sign of the obsessiveness when the viewer recognizes the original garments, or even the better, the original fabrics, which make an appearance in the Good Period Film. It is not bad; it is just obsessive.

Ah, the Manolo has put his fingers on the truly wonderful American classics jazz recording of the 1950s. And maybe this recording it lives under the name of Adderly but is in the fact of it an ensemble recording much in the styles of the great Miles Davis groups of the period. Even the most casual of the listeners of the classic jazz should motor with haste to the local musics shop to purchase this disc. Along with Miles' "Kind of Blue" such a person could die happy.

This gentle reader is relieved to see this pick by the Manolo, as he was somewhat frightened by the inclusion of Phillip Glass in a previous week. Ayyyyyy! the Obscurity of it!
