The Next Carnivale of the Couture

Manolo says, the next Carnivale of the Couture it will be held at the Style Tribe. Here is the topic, it is the good one.

For this week’s Carnivale of Couture, I want to celebrate our role as bloggers.

What distinguishes us from fashion press is our lack of limits: we can express as we please, and our unique personalities make us more interesting rather than less professional.

To that end, I want to invite everyone to write about their most significant fashion purchase. Not the most expensive or most exciting, but the one that was somehow pivotal, or meaningful to you personally.

As the Manolo has said this it is the good topic, one which should generate the excellent posts.

70’s vintage leather hip-length jacket, 2004. It’s the first really nice thing I ever bought with my own money- the kind of jacket that is so perfectly constructed that I can wear it for the rest of my life and always be in good taste. Also the most expensive thing I’ve ever gotten for myself, but I wanted it so badly. It’s a mellow-orange leather and at first, I was kind of afraid to wear it, because it’s got “oomph”, it stands out because of its color and vintage cut. Finally, I realized that I love it and I’m going to wear it with confidence and to hell with everybody else. So I have. sigh. thanks for the opportunity to reminisce.

Chocolate brown pantsuit with peachy-orange pinstripes, peachy-orange sleeveless knit top, and brown, orange, and pink scarf, chocolate brown shoes with 1.5-inch heels and 4 cute little buttons on the toe. I purchased this ensemble as an interview outfit, in case I had interviews at the graduate schools I applied to. I only owned two other suits–a red silk pantsuit, and a green wool skirt suit that looked a bit militaristic–and thought both were a little too much for an interview. The outfit appealed to me because though it’s different from the standard black-with-colored-shirt interview costume, it’s different-ness is subtle.

I did wear it to one interview, and the interview was successful, even garnering me an offer of a T.A. position (yay for not having to pay tuition! more money for shoes!). So even though it’s not my first “grown-up” suit, the purchase and wearing of the suit marked a sort of transition to adulthood.

For me it was a black Noa Noa shirt and a dark brown suede Fenn Wright & Manson skirt. Until that point, I’d been scrimping and saving as a poor student and then an underpaid newbie working in London. I could barely afford the jeans and t-shirts I was living in; i certainly couldn’t afford the shirt and skirt - but decided I’d rather have them than eat… and then, for the first time in my life, I suddenly had some great clothes and the confidence to be a bit more go-getter: So I got out of London, moved to Brighton and I’ve had heaps more fun ever since.

The clothes are still in my wardrobe but I don’t really wear them that much (although I could - they’re classics and I still love them) but more - they signalled the decision to live the life I wanted, whether I thought I could afford it or not. Turns out I could :)
