The Next Carnivale of the Couture

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Manolo says, the next Carnivale of the Couture it will be held at the Final Fashion.

So this week I want to invite anyone who wants to join to describe that favourite outfit that you always like to wear still warm from the dryer. Bonus points if you’ve got pictures! What does your outfit say about you?

For me it’s my current favourite pair of jeans - wide leg, but not flared. I know these are totally out of style that’s why I like them. I shop so rarely I always yearn for trends and then by the time I’m ready to shop it’s already too trendy so I can’t bring myself to buy anything knowing that it will just go out of style again. Ok, basically I’m a giant tightwad, but you knew that.

Also my new argyle socks. I love argyle socks. I’ll splurge for socks. These babies were about $12.

The Manolo will not mention what he spends for the socks, as the answer it may well brand the Manolo as the voluptuary.

Manolo the Columnist

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Manolo says, the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post it is now available.

Today, the Manolo speaks of growing older

Dear Manolo

I am turning 30 in August, and I want to celebrate in a most fabulous way. I thought perhaps the perfect festive birthday shoe would serve as inspiration for the whole event. [ I should also mention that I am still but a poor working girl.]

Rebecca

Thirty year of the age? It is indeed the time for celebration!

How the Manolo fondly rememebers the festivities which surrounded his own passage into the fourth decade of his life. There was much weeping and the rending of the clothes, as the Manolo, Peter Pan like, attempted to cling to the last green-colored scraps of his fading, be-tighted youth.

But, youth, like all good things must come to the end, and we must all proceed inexorably into the next stage of life, where the clothes will be less colorful and the pirate enemies more dangerous.

Happily, we will always have the shoes to accompany us on our arduous journey to the grave.

Thus the Manolo he cannot but approve of any plan that features the beautiful shoes.

And because the Rebecca, she will be celebrating the full summer flower of life in the most appropriate month of August, the Manolo he would recommend the flowered Caprice wedges from the Nicole Miller.

Not only are they perfect for the August hot birthday party, but they are also available in the rainbow of colors, and are on the deep discount sale at the Zappos, 40% off the usual price!

The World Gone Mad

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Manolo says, the Manolo asks you, perhaps rhetorically, has the entire world gone mad for evil? Does no one but the Manolo see the truth?

It is not as if there is not the evidence.

For the example look at this from the Asian newspaper.

Then a frisson of excitement ripples through the gaggle hovering about the entrance. Lagerfeld is coming! The anticipation is almost schoolgirl-ish.

He comes marching through in boots, lean black trousers, powder-white ponytail and a brocade jacket, like a veteran rock star.

Lagerfeld is also gone in a flash, with his black-clad entourage like a dark plume of smoke.

It is the common trope of the diabolical: first anticipation of the celebrity of evil, then the dramatic appearance in dark clothing, accompanied by the phalanx of toadies, and then, suddenly…poof! Vanishment in the cloud of smoke!

All that is missing is the strong smell of brimstone.

Brimstone? Perhaps brimstone well masked.

Here is more, this time from the Robin Givhan of the recent Pulitzer.

Before the eyes settle on his attire, the nose takes note. Lagerfeld smells vaguely floral, with a hint of powder. He has spritzed himself with Iris Nobile by Acqua di Parma. It is a woman’s fragrance owned by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the same company that controls Fendi.

Yes, evil, but flowery feminine evil, the scent of mortal decay covered by the cloying smell of the tube roses.

Such evil, it preens, it struts.

He walks chest forward and with short strides. An observer, who happened to catch one of Lagerfeld’s television appearances, describes his walk as a “Prince meets Ron Wood pimpalicious strut.”

Pimpalicioius?

Vampiricious!

Even those who would toady up to the Lagerfeld are “unsettled” by his mere proximity.

“He’s an authentic genius,” says Peter Marx, president of Saks Jandel, who has known Lagerfeld for 20 years. “There’s something unsettling and special about him.”

Meaning, he gives one the impression that one is being fitted for the shroud.
