I have a question: I was once the merchandise manager at a well known retailer, and now I am basically a stock girl. What are MY choices for work appropriate shoes?

Paperpusher--
I felt for you as I read your post this AM. Do not give up hope; there is always opening your own practice (which several of my law school friends did and are happily setting their own dress codes) or a non-law job where you can finally wear bright colors and fun shoes without eliciting scowls from your 'betters' (which is the route I took).

As for you ladies in Miami--I have a friend down there who told me they have something called 'summer rules' which relaxes the dress code for court (no jackets for men; open toed shoes for the ladies). Wouldst that those of us slogging through sweltering summers in the northeast had such perks! I might have delayed my exit from the profession by a year or two.

To DMCollins -- I can believe that. When I was a summer associate one year, we got messages from time to time that said things like "Remember, knapkin tops are NOT appropriatve officewear, even under suit jackets." When I asked an associate about it, he said "Oh, don't worry, that's just the Miami office."

You ladies should be practicing law here in Miami, where the female attorneys get away with wearing the most super fantastic shoes, even in court!

Oh Manolo, once again your description captures the very essence of the topic you are discussing. Unlike LizaBet, I'm still in the law office looking out of (my own small associate) window and wondering, what the HELL am I doing here?

Manolo, you have perfectly captured the stultifying atmosphere of the modern law office. I was reminded why eight years ago I told the senior partner I was going out to lunch and never went back!

The shoes are lovely, by the way--if I'd had such a pair during my lawyer days, I might not have left the profession!
