The Ad of the Ann Coulter
Manolo says, several of the Manolo’s internet friends have left the comments taking the Manolo to task for the appearance on his blog of the ad for the new book by the Ann Coulter.
The Manolo he has yet to see this new ad, however, he assumes that it has appeared because of the efforts of the Pajamas Media network to sell the advertising.
And so this ad it has not been explicitly approved by the Manolo.
However, after having said this, the Manolo he does not have the problem taking the advertisments of the Ann Coulter, just as he would not have the problem taking the advertisments of the Michael Moore.
They are not peddling the drugs, nor the pornography, nor are they engaged in the illegal activities. Yes, such extremely partisan peoples are frequently unpleasant, and shrill, and hectoring, but this it is the free country, the free internets, and the peoples are allowed to speak their minds and advertise their books, even if those minds and books are not filled with the very attractive thoughts.
Of the course, it has always been the policy of the Manolo to keep the shoe blog of the Manolo somewhat free of the very heated and often unpleasant political discussions that animate so much of the blogosphere.
This place, the Manolo’s Shoe Blog, it should be the refuge of harmony and friendship, where peoples who may not always agree can come to discuss the fashion, to gently mock the celebrities, and to celebrate the mutual love of the beautiful shoes.
And so the Manolo he would ask that we remember that we should treat each other as friends well-met, in the spirit of mutual comity, even–perhaps especially–if we do not agree with each other.

Well, said, Manolo, well said. Manolo can’t keep all of the scum off of the blog.

Manolo can’t keep all of the scum off of the blog.
Now, now Kris, you comment might appear to be ungracious and, as such, very unfabulous.

I agree with Nora to the Nth degree. Let’s be civil, shall we?
June 7th, 2006 at 1:54 am
Hear, hear, Manolo. We are here to be fabulous, not to bicker.
June 7th, 2006 at 6:06 am
In the words of the dearly departed mother of the Dora- “It takes all kinds dear, and the more offensive the behavior, the more civil your response should be. Or ignore them entirely, it’s better for your blood pressure.”
Good advice-
The poking of the gentle fun and the adoring of the shoes and the Manolo is the point of this venue.

The Manolo, once again he makes the peace among the nations.
June 7th, 2006 at 7:54 am
The Manolo has once again expressed his brilliance and fantasticness! In the words of my Mamaw, “Preach, brother! Preach peace!”
June 7th, 2006 at 8:50 am
It is the testament to the Monolo and his exceptional taste and poise that all that is needed to quell the storms of local partisan rancour is the Shoe Blog’s gracious and elegantly-presented surroundings.
Consider the Shoe Blog the Internet’s Mediterranean vacation.
This comes as the pleasant surprise. So much so that I nominate the Monolo for the higher office — not that one exists higher than this one, but you get my meaning…
June 7th, 2006 at 11:17 am
Most excellent response, Manolo. I love you even more because of it, and I did not think that was even possible!
June 7th, 2006 at 11:21 am
FWIW, I’ve seen pictures of Ann Coulter in some very fabulous shoes.
Great response, Manolo.
June 7th, 2006 at 12:09 pm
all i can say is I hope that the ann coulter, may she need the services of the doctor of the feets for all those corns and bunions that will erupt due to the evil inside the sole. but she and and her book cover are welcome, why not?
June 7th, 2006 at 12:41 pm
Beautifully put. The site of the Manolo is an oasis amidst all of the partisan filth. It refreshes and soothes. Merci beaucoup, mon ami!
June 7th, 2006 at 12:45 pm
Bravo Manolo.
As usual, you are a gentleperson of good taste and humor.
June 7th, 2006 at 1:15 pm
Thank you, dear Manolo for this refuge from the storm.
June 7th, 2006 at 2:08 pm
Bravo Manolo! Wonderfully written.

One more of the examples of why La Gémelle, she is convinced that superfantastic Manolo, he is the most civilized man in the world of the ‘Net.
June 7th, 2006 at 2:22 pm
It is well that the Manolo has gently rebuked the ungracious clamorers. To denounce the Coulter carbon based unit would be but a small thing, but how long would it be before he must then stop singing the praises of the stilletto heeled shoe and forever embrace the upwardly curved toe shape of the Dhimmi approved footgear?
To allow some the space to talk of gracious things, other folk accept saying and doing the necessary things. No charge.
June 7th, 2006 at 3:59 pm
The Manolo he does not dispute this, he merely points out that there are many places where what is “necessary” may be argued with great gusto, but here, at the blog of the Manolo, there should be the refuge from the fight.
And so his arguement it was one of appropriateness.
Normally, one does not heatedly argue the politics in the cathedral, or at the museum, or at the game of the baseball. There are standards of decorum for such places.
Likewise, the Manolo wishes to impose, however gently, similar standards in this place.
June 7th, 2006 at 4:05 pm
Oh, joy! I had actually avoiding visiting the Manolo since the borderline-bickering commenced.
It was akin to avoiding my family when they snipe and fight… nice to be away from the sniping and fighting, but oh how I love my family and don’t ever want to miss out on anything!
Thank you, Manolo, for your diplomatic words and kind assertions.
June 7th, 2006 at 5:04 pm
The Manolo, he is the perfect peacemaker.
June 7th, 2006 at 5:49 pm
Oh Manolo, is there any possible way to keep the advertisements apolitical as this is a refuge from the fight as you contend?
I’m sure I speak for the majority when I say we desire neither Coulter nor Moore and that ads for more superfantastic shoes serve as better window dressing.
June 7th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
AskMom, she has the strong political opinions and in other places online might even express them. But here, she is happy to be part of the group wishing only to discuss the elegant living and the beautiful shoes, surely two things which all civilized peoples can agree upon. There are tacky and refined peoples supporting the causes of both the Coulter and the Moore. And so what? That is what freedom is, the freedom not to have one’s politics and one’s fashion joined at the hip. To choose the Choos or the Blahnik, and to vote for the donkeys or the elephants regardless, THAT is freedom. Freedom not only worth fighting and dying for, but worth respecting our opponents for, too.
June 7th, 2006 at 7:07 pm
Well said, Manolo. I truly appreciate the reprieve from partisan bickering that the blog of the Manolo offers.
June 7th, 2006 at 8:11 pm
The Manolo IS a cathedral. It is the cathedral of taste and class and the appreciation for all that is beautiful, particularly beautiful shoes. This site is like free therapy.
June 7th, 2006 at 9:11 pm
Ms. Katz would prefer her fashionable Switzerland to be free of partisan billboards. Unless the billboards supports her side, which this one does not.
a tout a l’heure,
Ms. Katz

If only the PJM ads weren’t so damned big.
June 7th, 2006 at 11:29 pm
The Manolo’s friend wishes to remind him that he is a man of high standards, as are his readers. The Manolo would be a coward if he did not impress his PM associates with his distaste for the visage of such woman as that menacing his readers from the top of his beloved blog.
And The Manolo’s friend would like to point out that The Manolo has never run an advertisement for Michael Moore, so equal time is of no import.
June 7th, 2006 at 11:31 pm
How preciously sensitive we are if the mere *sight* of someone with whom we disagree sends us into fits of apopleptic indignation. The freedom of the speech demands the thick skin. And in this case, all we have is a mere invitation to consume the torrentially free speeches of the Anne Coulter. Though I am loathe to give such credit to the Coulter, in this case her image alone seems to have captured the attention rightly due to the preetty Pradas and deleecious Delmans.
So to all those reeling with horror at this advertisement’s fleeting presence on the Manolo’s glorious blog, take a hint from the girls in La Retrosessuale’s junior high school and get over yo’ damn selves.
Manolo, grazie mille for your gracious and elegant treatment of this debate!
June 8th, 2006 at 12:06 am
Even media whores need fabulous shoes too.
June 8th, 2006 at 8:00 am
The political beliefs of the Manolo, whatever they might be, have nothing to do with the good humor and taste that bring me to your site. So even if the Manolo’s advertising told me something about his beliefs — and he assures us it tells us nothing — I wouldn’t care one way or the other.
But as far as I can tell, both Michael Moore and Ann Coulter preach their particular brands of political idiocy simply because they will find buyers for it, and in doing so encourage some of our less thoughtful and informed citizens to hold their thoughtless and ignorant beliefs with ever greater ferocity. Their cynical, humorless encouragement of the stupidly opinionated is hardly fabulous.
The Manolo is selling a moment of graciousness, and advertising hacks like these diminishes the product.
June 8th, 2006 at 8:46 am
One merely wishes to observe that if the Manolo truly wishes to absent himself from the politics, he might reconsider his membership in the regrettably partisan Pajamas Media. Who, it must be noted, are not in the business of buying ads from Michael Moore.

Hello
Would anyone like to have a discussion of the Iraq war, George Bush’s presidency, Hillary’s chances for the Democratic nomination, AIDS, global warming, the Arab Israeli conflict, Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, the French presidency?
No, thought not. That’s not why we come here. So let the Manolo get on with running his superlative blog in any way he thinks fit, because it’s his, not ours, and if we don’t like it we can always go off and set up our own, which I daresay is what HE did in the first place. The Manolo is what the Manolo is, and his political views are of no concern to me whatsoever. The person of the Manolo, as it manifests itself online is what we are here for, and the pleasure he brings us. Everything else is irrelevant.

The Manolo is truly superfantastic.

“AskMom, she has the strong political opinions and in other places online might even express them. But here, she is happy to be part of the group wishing only to discuss the elegant living and the beautiful shoes, surely two things which all civilized peoples can agree upon.”
Hear, hear! One could replace “AskMom” with “Cat” in the above excerpt, and it would be equally accurate.
Okay, maybe the Cat will express just a bit of an opinion here to make a point: The Coulter, she disgusts me (as does the Michael Moore, for that matter). But, people, it’s just an AD! A simple advertisement should not cause one to go into a tailspin. If you find the Coulter as distasteful as I do, then do not click on her ad and do not buy her book. Problem solved! Now, let’s talk about the shoes and the fashion and the elegant living some more!
June 8th, 2006 at 6:25 pm
I’m with furlagirl.
I find it interesting that the longest thread I’ve seen running here in a while is the one politically charged one, if you can call it that, and its entire point is about how we don’t want the blog to get political. A little ironic, hmm?
June 8th, 2006 at 11:46 pm
In her book, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, Coulter criticized four 9/11 widows who pushed for the 9/11 Commission and have been critical of US security policies. Coulter wrote “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.” She also wrote “And by the way, how do we know their husbands weren’t planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they’d better hurry up and appear in Playboy. . .”
Ann Coulter does not simply have different views than I do. She is extremely offensive.

well said, manolo.

CBOT, thou misseth the point. Just ignore the ad, and look at the shoes. COncern oneself of the shoes. Contemplate the shoes, only the shoes.
Shoes. Ah, how I love shoes. Those days when one may feel fat, one merely need put on the adorable Charles Davids and one is transported to sylph-like beauty. All eyes are upon the delightful shoes. Those days when one’s coworkers babble the insanity, one need merely gaze upon one’s Ferragamos, and feel content, content as a Buddhist monk enshrined in his zenness of being. Those days when one is wearied by the fuss and terma..gantry of the world, one looks down at the spiffy Cole-Haan oxfords and then trots trippingly down the sidewalk, re-energized ant ready to rock.
Shoes. Tiny vessels of leather, miniature floors for one’s feets, ready to take one anywhere and soothe the troubled soul with their sleekitude.
