Miss Meghan on the Platform!

Manolo says, the Manolo’s always amusing friend, the Miss Meghan, she is urging the women of the New York to proudly wear the platform shoes

Ladies, listen up. It’s a new season, there is a bit of a nip in the air, and the stores are full of a delicious shoe - the platform. They are sexier, higher and more fun than ever before. But “Oh!” you gasp, “they are too high, too wobbly, too … stripper.”

Get over it, and get into it. Platforms are here to stay, and if you are an intelligent woman, which I know you are, you’ll master how to make your platforms work for you.

More than stilettos, more than the kitten heel and much, much more than the sensible ballet flat, platforms make you a tower of strength. Tall and majestic, you now can peer above everyone’s head and spot that cab two blocks away (and grab it before the non-platformed rabble below you even see it). You can pluck items off high shelves with ease, and now men must look up to you, much like the ancient Greek actors who wore elevated platforms to raise themselves up from mere mortal to godlike status.

Naturally, the Manolo he has the suggestions for the platform shoes that you should perhaps be wearing.

Here is the entertaining and stylish platform from the Missoni. The Manolo finds the kiltie detail especially witty, as it is the this, and not the rest of the shoes, which carries the fabled Missoni pattern.

And here is the square-toed platform bootie from the Stuart Weitzman that Manolo thinks is most “happening”.

The woman who would wear these to the office would not only stand out for her fashion sense, but would also tower regally above the petty distractions and inconveniences of her work day, which is exactly the point the Miss Meghan was making about the pleasures of the platforms.

Alas, the Fausta, at 5′10′ might tower above it all so much that she might bump into the doorjambs!

  2. Emily Says:

Ay, platforms are here to stay. Much like the cockroaches.

  3. The Charlotte Allen Says:

Fausta, don’t be afraid of platforms! I’m just as tall as you are, and I bought a fab pair of four-inch-heel, ankle-strap Stuart Weitzman platforms yesterday (alas not available at online stores). Trying them on, I felt like a goddess. In fact, it’s we tall women who can make platforms work, because our towering frames are in proportion with the thick soles. Short women in platforms tend to look as though they’re wearing elevator shoes.

  4. Sarah Mae Says:

But so many platforms have wretched rigid soles! And platforms with narrow heels and pointy toes? Back in the late nineties, I had several pairs of chunky platforms that I wore a lot, but they all had flexible soles. I walk and walk and walk miles every day, and if you can’t walk in it I will not be wearing it.

  5. Meander Says:

Be tall, Fausta, and know that short men everywhere look upon you as a goddess!

  6. D.L. McNair Says:

As a shoe lover and observer I am a bit embarrased(sp) to say this, but I’m frightened at the prospect of wearing platform shoes. Don’t get me wrong, I love a sleek long heel that strengthens my calves and gives a wider outlook than in my natural 5′7 heighter….BUT..the idea of wearing not only a heel more that 2 1/2, maybe 3 inches tall plus on a heel that is super skinny. It all goes back to years of falling and spraining of the ankle as a young girl. But I will give it a go if the right platform speaks to me. :)

  7. Ronikins Says:

I’ve never given up on the platforms….I LOVE them!

  8. Fausta Says:

Mmmm, you guys are talking me into it!

  9. ShannonShoe Says:

These are what I am wearing today…

I have gotten more compliments than I can count on these — and I also walked 20 blocks to work in them this morning. Because platforms tend to have a thicker heel (and of course the platform itself) I actually find them easier to walk in than a traditional heel.

PS — Agree with Charlotte, Meander, et al…I am 5′8″ w/o shoes and I LOVE the height…it makes a statement.

  10. Pencils Says:

I’m already six feet tall. Can I skip the platforms and wear ballet flats or kitten heels?

  11. Kim Says:

These boots could make me metaphorically beat peeps about the head. They would go with just about anything. I am loving these. Manolo, as usual, you are the oracle of feetswear.
