Shoes for the DvF Dress
Manolo says, one of the Manolo’s many internet friends has asked the Manolo the question.
I’ve bought a fabulous black wrap dress. I wear it with stilettos for an evening dinner, but I’d like to dress it down a bit with boots. I want to wear that super fantastic dress at work too!
What type of boots would you suggest ? High boots ? Mid-calf ? Leather ? Suede ?
Thank you very much,
Julie
First the Manolo must compliment the Julie on her marvelous taste. Every super fantastic girl must have at least one of the Diane von Furstenberg wrap dresses in her closet. They are the very definition of the word “classic”.
Beacuse the shilouette and fit of the DvF wrap is very soft and feminine and pretty and because it is also the very practical garment, the Manolo would recommend that the feetwear should have these same qualities of softness, practicality, and femininity.
Thus he would suggest this black knee-high suede boot from the Michael Kors.
Normally, the Manolo is not the fan of the chunky chains on the boots, but in this case, because of the black-on-black combination of the boots and the dress, the chain adds the needed flash to the ensemble.

Sorry, but that heel is awful!

Oh dear. I must regretfully disagree with that choice of boot.

I love it myself

Darling Manolo
Love the boots – but not with that dress.

La Petite Acadienne isn’t feeling the chain on the heel of that boot. She would perhaps recommend something with a bit of a buckle instead. Peut-etre something that looks a bit like this?

Oh dear,
Manolo, have you gone COMPLETELY crazy. I agree with La Petite Acadienne or perhaps you could something with a teensy bit of embellishment or else you can always try some ankle boots.

I really, really don’t like that boot. I’ll bet the chain rattles as you walk in them, like the Jacob Marley, no? It is the boot of the Christmas Carol!!
A pair of Kenneth Cole Reaction “hi flyers” would be much better with that lovely dress.

I own that very dress and have worn it with black suede knee-high boots. I have also worn it with black stilettos. It is truly the perfect dress for nearly every single occasion.
As for the boots you recommend maestro, I must join with the others and say feh. I have come to the conclusion that Michael Kors hates women and especially hates their feet. I have not seen one single pair of shoes he’s designed that I would consider attractive or flattering.
Does the Manolo design dresses? No. He makes perfect shoes.
Michael Kors should stick to what he knows: clothes.

It took me a few minutes to warm up to it, but I think this look could be great, if not for the faint of heart. The chain will be much less distracting when it’s down by the ground, and the boots themselves have a lovely silhouette.
Although this is not the little black dress solution for the larger-than-model-sized super fantastic woman, the dress will not flatter and the boots won’t fit over her calves.

Working in retail, I have seen many a wrap dress. They look good on most women. As for those boots….aye Manolo. I don’t really know if I like them or hate them. It’s like the chain and the heel are too much at once. I’m more a fan of this:

I second La Petite Chou Chou’s vote for the Banana boots–that dress cries out for the higher heel. May I add that I’ve found Banana Republic footwear to be a remarkably good value: quality leathers, long-lasting construction, comfortable lasts that actually accommodate the human foot. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the Banana wardrobe.

Ayiyyyyy! Although I am the most humble fan of the Manolo, I agree with tout le monde that the heel of the boots, they are most wrong. I regret, however, that I cannot jump on the Banana Republic bandwagon — the boots they may be leather, yet they look like the vinyl, at least in the picture, and the heel of the different color from the leg it is unseemly for a dress not made of denim.
As for the boots I wear with my wrap dress, http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/16756114/c/4811.html
Oh yeah, baby.

Those Donald Pliners are fabulous, Wannabe!! It’s a little bit glam, a little bit dominatrix. Love those, although the 3 1/4 inch stiletto heel might be a little bit difficult for actual walking. Maybe they are more “sitting down and looking fabulous” boots. = )

Thank you Verity! But may I say, Pliners are unusually comfortable and easy to walk in. Even the high heels (though I think my version may be an inch lower, to be honest). I own them in 2 colors.

la petite chou chou, I love those boots and, in fact, own them in a different color. I have to recommend them for a reason other than looking fab with a wrap dress, though. I’m 6’2″ tall, and have a horrible time finding knee high boots that fit. These are a dream for taller girls or those with slightly wider than average calves who still want to tuck pants in to them (if you go for that look).

Wannabe, I just figured that since the questioner wanted boots to dress it down…need I say more? The boots you chose are pretty, but in the same sense the Banana look vinyl-ly, those look plastic-y. To each her own!!! :)
Mywhimsey, thanks! I personally like those the best of all Banana’s boots right now. And to Bon Mot’s credit, I too have found Banana shoes to be decently comfortable and extremely durable and long-lasting. Moderate price, too.

I have that dress in black with 3/4 sleeves, and in red with long sleeves. It is indeed the perfect dress.
