Manolo the Columnist

Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.

Dear Manolo,

My husband and I are going to Miami Beach for a week-long vacation this winter. We love to walk, and we love the nightlife. So, I’m looking for some flat shoes comfortable enough to stroll in for miles, but also fabulous enough to get me in the door of the clubs.

Manolo says, ayyyyyy! To be in Miami during the winter, it is the perfect time!

The season of the hurricanes is past, the weather is pleasant and warm, and the palm trees along the Ocean drive are bedecked with the twinkling holiday lights, reminding you that you are happily not shoveling the snow nor fist-fighting in the suburban mall for the last Ticklish Elmo Extreme.

Indeed, for the person from the north, everyday in Miami is the sort of Christmas Day, the crazy, pastel-colored, Ron Rico fueled, toasty warm holiday.

“Hooray! Santy Claus is arriving tonight on the jet-ski!”

Naturally, you will want the festive shoe, one that fully expresses your joy, and so the Manolo would recommend the Taj-Kss from the Delman, the jeweled thong sandal that comes in the golden color known as “sunshine.”

Maybe it was just me (being the western girl that I am) but I never saw so much black in my life as on vacation in Palm Beach. I do hope it’s different in Miami- I suspect it must be, with shoes such as these being the recommendation!

It looks fabulous! Although it’s deadly winter here… this slipper makes me want one!

It’s a pretty enough pair here on a web page. I wonder though how comfortable they can possibly be for walking, being hardly more than a layer of flat leather. But more importantly, there’s no way to make a silk purse out of a pair of shower shoes. The wearer still exposes the entire foot while walking (and hardly ever to positive effect) and makes that incredibly annoying flop flop flop sound everywhere she goes. No amount of golden glitter is going to make a class act out of that.

The Livia is incorrect about the beautiful sandal the Manolo has shown us here. I own a pair of the Birkenstocks in the same style (eep, yes I know, but I was in Italy and everyone wore them) and because of how far back the strap is, it prevents the shoe from flopping and keeps it secure to your foot. Additionally, the single layer of leather will probably prove more comfortable as it shapes itself to the foot of the wearer.
The shoe looks like something that would go with the Uli’s outfits for the warm Miami weather.
