I’m not sure I agree with the notion that a shoe must have “a fairly stiff sole.” Ballet shoes do not have stiff soles, but they are still shoes, are they not? Perhaps not shoes that one would wear out of the dance studio or off the stage, but shoes nonetheless.
Hmm, shouldn’t there be mention of a heel in this definition as well as the sole? Or is there such great and varied flexibility of form in this instance, much as a cookie is but a small cake?
Such a conundrum. How difficult it must be to be a poor shoe these days! Some aspirin, please.
