When I was a little girl, my father used to take us downtown to ride the escalators at El Corte Ingles! (He was stationed at the air force base outside of Madrid.) Then we would stop at a sidewalk cafe for a Coke (a real one -- made with cane sugar), bread and pickled sardines. Or perhaps churros con chocolate. How sad it makes me to think that The Manolo was denied these simple pleasures of childhood. El Corte Ingles!
