The same logic applies to building a wardrobe: spend twice as much, purchase half as many and it will last four times as long. (more in my experience)

Why fill your closet (or your life for that matter) with rubbish, when you can invest in quality and enjoy the benefits of your investment for a lifetime.

Cary always knew how to charm a lady, now didn't he?

all i can do is sigh, i know i know... but i'm way too fickle to settle for one pair of shoes. even if they are the nicest in the world, i'd rather have 40 pairs of $40 shoes from loehmans.not that i have 40 pairs of $40 shoes, morelike uh, 80.
(eyes dart from left to right)

Rumours of Cary Grant being gay are rooted in Grant's sharing a beach house with Randolph Scott even though there was a steady parade of women going through the place. There is a documentary about Grant in which his alleged homosexuality is raised and Betsy Drake, one of his wives, shows how startled she was at hearing that he was supposed to be gay says "here I was fucking him and he was supposed to be gay!" That little Betsy Drake of "Every girl should be married" would talk like that is what startled me. Also, Chevy Chase called him a "homo" on Tom Snyder's talk show and was then sued, successfully, by Grant for it. Any time that a man dresses too well, he's tagged as being gay.

That may have been true in Mr. Grant's days, but let's do the math.

One pair of "good" shoes, and we'll put the baseline at Allen Edmonds or Alden--this means approx. 330 retail (comparing apples to apples).

To get 20+ years out of shoes like this you're going to need 2 pair and alternate them. That's $660. Plus resoling every 3-4 years (if you're wearing them daily)--let's just say the resoling is $50 every 4 years for $400 over 20 years X 2 pair of shoes.

That's over 1000.

A pair of Florsheims run about $100. Dunham's the same. Rockports too. I've got a pair of Dunham's I bought about 4 years ago and beat the heck out of. Never polished, worn in all sorts of weather (at least all sorts you find in CA). They're about dead, but they've never cost me an additional dime.

So given 2-3 years for a pair of "cheap" shoes, you'll get an average of 20-30 years wear for the same price as 2 pair of "good" shoes.

And if you go to payless you could SERIOUSLY do better than that--my wife has a couple pair of shoes from payless that are in the 6-8 year range and were >30 bucks.

I'd bet that the sweet spot on price/performance is in the 200-300 dollar range, high enough that they use better leathers and stitching giving you the 5-10 year longevity (I've got a pair of Eccos that are about 3 years old and show no signs of needing replacement. Of course they're still corrected grain leather).

Amen, Verity Kindle.

Is that the rumor, that he was gay? Sigh. I should have known that he was too gorgeous to be straight...

I don't care if he was gay, straight or from the outer arm of Arcturus, no one walked into a room like he did. There are some Hollywood "stars" who aspire to be like him, but just make themselves look silly in the process. Clooney, I'm looking at you, you emptyheade squishyface wannabe.
