Manolo the Columnist

Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.

Dear Manolo,

Can you recommend a pair of shoes that would be good for going to church on Easter morning?

Audrey

Manolo says, the Manolo must admit that has never completely understood the American version of Easter. Elsewhere this day of joy is celebrated with religious processions and family feasts.

Yes, in North America there is still the ham-based dinner, but here the main event of the day occurs when the tiny tots wake up, rush down the stairs and launch themselves teeth first into the five pounds of chocolate, marshmallow, and jelly beans, which have been left for them by the giant fairy-tale rodent.

Later, at church, these same children, now under the deleterious influence of Cadbury’s Crème Eggs and Yellow Peeps, will vigorously bounce up and down, twitch, and swing their legs in the pews, while their parents shush them repeatedly.

Happily, some of this sugar-fueled energy will be dissipated by the hunting of the eggs, during which their best new clothes will be permanently stained with grass, food coloring, and chocolate saliva.

Of the course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look your best for both church and the mayhem which follows.

And so, here is the beautiful shoe from the Stuart Weitzman in the primrose color, perfect for the day!

Those are lovely! I wish I had those to wear with my pink Easter dress. Sadly I will have to wear the beige sandals I wore last year.

Oh Manolo…this is one of the funniest things I have read in a loooooong time! Your take on the American ham-based, chocolate-fueled, holiday is hysterical.
    Thanks for the laughs!

    mmmmmm….peeps. =)

Only Philistines eat yellow peeps. The true connisseurs eat cocoa peeps.

    I think I’m in love!

  6. gemdiva Says:

Rachel, I don’t care what they do in the Phillipines, stale yellow peeps are the only way for a true American peep purist to celebrate the Easter holiday!

I just wanted to stop by and offer my congratulations on a wonderful blog. As an escapee from the world of fashion, I can’t pretend that I’m still not seduced now and again to look at ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ in the world of shoeware.

Your blog provides a fine public service. Long may you blog!

    Kind Regards

What, there are cocoa Peeps? Where? I’ve never seen them! I love Peeps – my favorite Easter treat. NOT stale, thank you. The fresher the better.

It may be weird how we celebrate Easter in the US, but you gotta love a holiday whose main activity involves eating candy. And we have two, counting Halloween! Yay, candy!

  9. Shoeflyer Says:

We’re usually not advocates of entirely pink designer shoes, but these are an exception. Style compliments color and class to create something truly special. Beautiful for Easter and Spring/Summer in general.

  10. desertwind Says:

    Ah.

The treasure hunt for the basket hid by the giant white rodent. Followed by the Easter egg hunt and the cracking of the confetti eggs.

Followed by three hours atonement encased in the most itchy of the starchy frilly dresses. Slapped into the hardest of pews by the mother wielding sticky balls of tissue.

Followed around by that impatient man with a camera who is dyin’ to get home fer Chrissake and have a good stiff drink.

Topped off by the pineapple ham!

    And more chocolate!

    What a day.

  11. Lurkingsmirk Says:

Gemdiva–a philistine is NOT someone from the Philippines. I would highly recommend not equating the two!

  12. spoilt Says:

…I think we all know a little pun when we see it, Lurking.

  13. opie the jeanne Says:

ahem. that would be the giant fairytale lagomorph who left all that candy.

  14. gemdiva Says:

Thanks Spoilt. Glad someone got it. :-)

  15. cari Says:

“The deleterious influence of Cadbury Creme Eggs”? How could you say such a thing? The mysterious Creme is none other than the divine nectar.

  16. Cute Shoes Says:

    Very Cute Shoes!
