I've never understood Manolo's like of the ankle strap, which poses the same aesthetic-existential questions as a choker. That is, the choker/ankle strap clearly breaks the line that the eye wants to see, so from whence comes the appeal that's not a formal visual one? The appeal of the choker, whether ribbon or diamonds, comes from signaling. Why does this appeal extend to the foot? ShannonShoe and Hmm are both right! I kvetch and curse every night as my husband rubs my cramped, sore feet, but for the sake of everyone else's eyes, I'm not giving up my pointy-toed high heels any time soon.
