Shoes for the Graduation, Part 2
Dear Manolo,
I am in eighth grade and recently bought a yellow dress for middle school graduation. My mother says that I am only allowed to get a new pair of shoes if they are flats because I have tons of heels. I would really appreciate it if you could give me a suggestion for a pair of super fantastic flats that are not too expensive as my feet are still growing. Thanks a Ton,
ElenaP.S. Here’s a picture of the dress.
Congratulations to the Elena!
And now it is on to the High School, where your life will be ruled by the cliques of hormonally-ravaged adolescents. Such joy!
Look, here is the Nevada 2 from the Me Too, the very colorful pattern flat which will provide the playful contrast with the yellow dress of graduation.

Totallly cute dress and shoes. However, I am a bit disturbed.
“My mother says that I am only allowed to get a new pair of shoes if they are flats…”
and I thought to myself, wow. Overprotective mom. I would totally allow my daughter to get her first pair of heels–her age and the occasion warrant it!
And then I read…
“…because I have tons of heels”
In the eighth grade? Really?

“…And now it is on to the High School, where your life will be ruled by the cliques of homonally-ravaged adolsescents. Such joy!”
Actually, I think that Middle school is worst.

The Annalucia must agree with the Nicole - the middle school (or “junior high” as it was called in the days of the Annalucia’s youth) is hellish and cruel. The high school is less so - perhaps because it is bigger, with more students breaking off to form new groups and participate in new activities, so that one’s social life is no longer at the mercy of the Future Hookers of America.
And she must also echo the puzzlement of the Wildflower: tons of heels, in eighth grade? The Elena, she truly has the indulgent parents.
However, congratulations to the young lady, not only on her graduation but on her willingness to ask advice as to tasteful clothing. Such good sense in the young is only to be encouraged.

The Manolo misspelled “adolescents”.
Yeah middle school is pretty bad, but the cliques really are the worst in high school.

Ayyyyy! Once again, the Manolo’s inability to spell shames him!

Has nobody noticed the “homonally-ravaged adolescents” should be hormonally? Slip of the tongue. :)

My only fear is that the dear girl MIGHT wear a bra with shoulder straps under that spaghetti-strap dress. If she did, everyone would see the bra straps. I am so tired of seeing that everywhere on girls and young women. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but if she does not wear a STRAPLESS BRA under that dress - - - - perhaps braless would work. (I guess that would depend on the fit of the dress.) Or am I the problem?
I, too, laud this young lady for asking the Manolo for shoe advice. This is an indicator that she may be superfantastic already.

As the mother of an 8th grader, I know the misery that is Middle School. Due to hormones in the chicken, the horror that we all used to have in 9th grade is now experienced in 7th or 8th.
Tons of heels. Wow, on growing feet, her folks must spend a ton on shoes! Wish I had tons.
Also, this is a sweet dress. And a big dance is an excellent opportunity to learn to use an iron…

Gina, if your are getting into a pre-emptive huff before you even know that the faux-pas will be committed, then yes, you may well be the problem. :)

Dear Wildflower -
You may be right about me.

Furthermore, last I remember from Chicago Manual of Style, a hyphen never follows “-ly.” I haven’t read the latest CMS, though, so it may have changed.
sorry! ;-/

I’m the mother of the author of this post. “Tons” is an exaggeration. However, she has a very nice pair of summer wedges, bought last year, that still fit and that go well with this dress. So I told her she could either wear those, or she could get some flats, which she is likely to get much more wear out of. And if she should outgrow them, well, they’re also my size . . .

Very sweet - however, don’t forget to iron the dress!
