Roberto Cavalli, Lack of Restraint

Here you see the two pairs of shoes from the Roberto Cavalli, shoes which properly capture the Robert Cavalli aesthetic, which the Manolo might describe as “Long Island Russian Mafia Gun Moll”.

And yet, for all of that, the Manolo finds these shoes “almost”. Almost worth wearing. Almost beautiful. Almost super fantastic.

The problem is that the Manolo, who believes that true fashion lies on the border between the trashy and the classic, thinks that these shoes are located just across the fashionable border into the land of the trashy, which means these shoes are “almost”.

Of the course, this tendency to keep adding the junk to the shoes until they seem too much is not merely the major draw back of the Roberto Cavalli., it is also undoubtedly his greatest selling point, making his shoes perfectly suited for the flashy and unsophisticated market he has captured.

Do not get the Manolo wrong, the Roberto Cavalli is talented, it is just that he needs to be restrained.

Look here is the picture of the Cavalli at the Costume Institue Gala.

Clearly, this is not the celebrity endorsement which the more sensitive designer would be happy to have.

Update: The Manolo’s internet friend Nicole disagrees.

“Long Island Russian Mafia gun moll” – Manolo dear, your way with the English language, it is most inspired.

As for the young lady in the second photo, the Annalucia does not recognize her (and yes, she has looked up the name, and no, “Jessica Simpson” means nothing to her) and can only conclude from the young lady’s demeanour that she has had the surgical augmentation and is eager to show it off. This is the desperation of “Hey! Look at me!” which is not classy and not even attractive.

  2. Jen Says:

Dear lord, what happened to Jessica Simpson’s mouth? She looks like a chipmunk.

As for the Roberto Cavalli, I didn’t care for him until Carrie from SATC made a big fuss about her Roberto Cavalli outfit that her boyfriend wanted to throw out. It looked silly on the hanger but at the end of the episode she wore it and it looked amazing. Clearly, it’s all about the styling.

  3. Eric3000 Says:

Wow, I thought Karl Lagerfeld wore the ugliest shirts but obviously I was wrong.

  4. ashley churchill Says:

wow wow wow. now that’s a well-matched set of broken china. xo

  5. DAL Says:

“Long Island Russian Mafia gun moll” is a good term for these and I usted to live on LI so I so know the look. I agree it’s an almost shoe. I like the open sort of scrollwork look but I think the patterend colored fabric behind it just kills it. It gets too busy. Perhaps something in a solid that was the same color as the edging like the light tan on the darker shoe?

  6. CyndiF Says:

When did the pneumatic breasts become trendy? When I see Jessica S. or Victoria Beckham, I always wonder who convinced them that this was a good look.

  7. cori Says:

The open toe shoe is definitely too much, but I almost feel as if the closed toe silver one could work, perhaps with a close cut little black dress. Still, that is a lot of shiny silver.

  8. la petite chou chou Says:

The brown is just plain ugly. The silver however….mute the colors, and make the silver less shiny and it could be a really good looking shoe…

However…presently….trashy shoes for a trashy snapshot subject.

  9. Gina Says:

Jen – – You are right about the J.S. mouth. Maybe that is why I was having trouble recognizing her in the first photos the Manolo posted from that night. I’m used to seeing her smile. Seeing her face from that night in multiple photos, I have to wonder if she CAN smile right now. Maybe she physically cannot do it right now.

  10. Ann S Says:

What’s with Jessica’s perpetual hands-on-hips-thrusting-out-the-chest stance these days? Is she trying to hold herself just so becuase the bowling balls on her chest have thrown her balance off that much? Scary!

  11. Poochie Says:

I kind of was digging the silver ones in a crazy scare everyone kind of way, but even I balked at their price tag of almost $800! It must be pricy to get all them colors!

  12. e Says:

    I’ll never understand Cavalli’s appeal.

  13. Phyllis Says:

    e you read my mind!

  14. Renée Says:

…. doesn’t JS look like an automaton or a Stepford wife to be? Creepy!
