Eurovision provides great ridiculosity without hurting anybody. It is campy and awful but never mean. How can we object?

I won’t lie. This year was a bit of a letdown. The semis were fun though.

Do you think that the contestants are deliberately acting flamboyant and campy? Like Annalucia commented, I wonder if this is just a giant spoof.

Oh dearest Manolo,
The complete sensory joy that is the Eurovisin contest must never be derided.
It is the tacky yet can’t not watch it phenonemenon that all europeans lurve. It provides hours of talk topics.
Added amusement is added by “Sir” Terry Wogans comments (broadcast by the British) that usually are just above the belt but always true. In fact us true afficiados of Eurovision rely on “Wogan” to make the whole event complete.
And who can not love the costumes…so much material for discussion…

Oh, Spain was pretty bad. ¡Qué vergüenza! Shouldn’t they at least make it a requirement that you must sing in tune?

I liked France though. I thought it was pretty funny to see that guy in the pink jacket running around in circles.

Latvia should have won, those guys could really sing and it was slightly less cheesy than the rest.

I live in Poland and we were at a bar last night and they were showing it. As an American, I had never seen it before. Hysterical! The Ukranians?

Of course, as geeky master students we were discussing the political implications of the voting and predicting the votes based on that.

France gives Turkey 12 points, is that supposed to make up for no EU membership, Estonia gave points to Russia after weeks of rioting over war memorials and what is with the Eastern European solidarity?

Oh but Manolo dear - surely the Eurovision, it is a gigantic spoof, is it not? Is not the whole point of the exercise, the outlandish costumes and the gyrations apparently learned in a solar system with only intermittent oxygen supplies?

The Annalucia, she must admit that she has never actually watched the Eurovision, and does not know how well the participants sing. But judging from the photos supplied by the Manolo, she is willing to think of it as the televised Halloween party.
