Manolo the Columnist
Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.
0Dear Manolo,
My new boyfriend, who works for a technology company, has invited me to his annual corporate picnic. I’ve decided I’m going to wear a nice sundress, what would you recommend in the way of shoes?
Charlotte
Manolo says, the Manolo can only imagine what sort of the hi-jinks the techno-geeks get up to at the annual company picnics.
On the surface it is probably just like any other corporate outing, the afternoon of roast weinnies, forced jollity, and the potentially career-ending fuax pas, but with the added benefit of the free commemorative pocket protectors and all of the Mountain Dew you can drink.
The good news is that you will win most of the athletic events. The bad news is that this and your carefree sundress-wearing good looks may end up encouraging the numerous, pasty, social-maladroit cyber-stalkers to begin Googling you as if you were the Linday Lohan.
Of all the summer sandals with the classic good looks the Manolo especially loves the Jackie from the Lilly Pulitzer, which comes in the gold, the white, the camel brown, and the Manolo’s favorite, the “parade pink.â€

I love these sandals. They are so basic but very classy in a way. I would probably go with the white myself because I would be able to wear them with more than one outfit.

LOL! So true.

La Petite Acadienne is humbled, as she had had recommended that exact shoe to the Melissa inquiring about the high school reunion. To have the Manolo himself validating La Petite Acadienne’s taste — what a lovely way to end the week!

Ah, the Manolo has clearly never been to the true geek picnic! Charlotte will likely find herself feeling rather overdressed in her adorable sundress and truly-super-fantastic-parade-pink Jackie sandals, as all others there (men, women and children, even dogs) will be in company t-shirts, shorts, and Tevas with socks. Possibly sneakers. Possibly amusing headgear.
At least, out here in Silicon Valley, this would be the case. It’s quite possible that geek society elsewear is less casual.
But in either case Charlotte will still be superfantastic, and cause the teeth of many there to gnash.
(And by the way–not only are many geeks extremely attractive, athletic, and fashionable (except at picnics, I don’t know why), but coffee beverages, Odwalla or Jolt! are the drinks of choice out here in the Valley…..)

I disagree with Vizia. If Charlotte is from Silicon Valley, she will probably most likely fit right in, given the number of trophy wives/girlfriends in the area (not that I am implying that Charlotte is a trophy girlfriend, she is instead super-fantastic for seeking the advice of the Manolo). There are lots of well-off male engineers in the area who have well-dressed significant others.
However, the Manolo’s description of “numerous, pasty, social-maladroit cyber-stalkers” is entirely true. I would know, I happen to be a female engineer . . . who wears Manolos :)
