The peep-toe was the style of shoe in the post-war years, and, as noted, QE the Queen Mother was very fond of this style, as was the then-Princess Elizabeth - she continued wearing them well after her accession in 1953, when a more sandal-like shoe had become vogue (though she adapted her style to that, eventually, before settling on the pump). Edward Rayne made absolutely beautiful, custom shoes for HM and HM for many years - well into the '90's, I believe. Thanks for sharing these with us, Manolo!

Hi Folks,
I came across your blog while surfing on Google. Really impressive and creative territory of yours. I am also a fashion junkie and am crazy for latest trends. Otherwise I am a journalist by profession looking after lifestyle. I will appreciate if you visit my blogs as well, can assure you won’t regret.
My blog URL: http://styletalk.org/,
http://designerplanet.org/
Am wondering if we can link exchange? This would allow us to visit each-other’s space with just click of a mouse.
Do let me know if you are interested, so that i can do the needful.

I have always been of the opinion that this particular pair of shoes is the platonic ideal of wedding shoe, and all other shoes are somehow less perfect. Kicking around somewhere on my harddrive is a black and white photograph of these shoes taken much closer to the actual wedding date and you can see the wonderful detail of the twisted satin. *sighs* It's enough to make one want to put up with a man just so one can get married.

Ah, but the Princess Elizabeth of the time was the daughter of the Queen Elizabeth(the Queen Mum) of the time who had the reputation of being a) a very snazzy dresser and b) an appreciator of beautiful shoes. So, I'm sure that she had an eye for something truly extraordinary(seed pearls on the buckles or not). Unfortunately, as one ages, comfort in the shoes becomes paramount (sniff), so having to spend a lot of time on one's feet, as the Queen does, daily, probably necessitates a change in the design of the footwear. She still likes to wear snazzy headgear, though.
Those are, however, quite luscious shoes, in a mid-50s way, of course.

The shoes seem comfortable enough. And quite pretty, even in today's terms. I wonder if they were made for wearing just that once and then relegated to the museology of royalty, along with the crown jewels?
