They waited on me hand and foot in the Chicago store, and all I ended up buying was some Spanx and a scarf. Another friend of mine who is a size 14 petite went in there looking for slacks and they not only found her what she needed but had them altered for her. Amazing. They were probably some of the more expensive pieces in her maternity wardrobe, but by investing in quality shoes, she got a more comfortable sole, was able to find them in a comfortable size (very different from her non-pregnant shoe size) and (most importantly) enjoyed the undeniable extra give that more expensive, well-made shoes in a fine soft leather can have. Which all sort of reminds me of the pretty ballet flats recently featured on Manolo for the Big Girl. My mom always had at least three pairs of what she called her “pregnancy shoes” which were the same flats in different colors. They were probably some of the more expensive pieces in her maternity wardrobe, but by investing in quality shoes, she got a more comfortable sole, was able to find them in a comfortable size (very different from her non-pregnant shoe size) and (most importantly) enjoyed the undeniable extra give that more expensive, well-made shoes in a fine soft leather can have.

There is a makeup counter for MAC in a Florence department store I am dying to go to, because they have the reputation of being incredibly snobbish. I am so longing to give them the "you are a shop assistant and I am a client in that shop" stare. Trouble is I don't need any cosmetics for the mo'. I'm nice to everybody until they pull out the snobbery or rudeness. A twenty year old man tried to cut in front of me at a buffet at a wedding last weekend. Stare of death. He backed off very slowly. I don't know what, giving, by the way, the establishment they work for a very bad name for service. That is why I was so delighted, when I visited Seattle and happened to go into Nordstrom, to find the assistants very friendly, helpful and sympathetic to my money concerns, considering the prices at that store gave me a headache just to look at them. And I ended up buying some expensive stuff I didn't know I needed until then. (It was a good investment, btw) Sometimes, though, we make the mistake of misjudging the attitude: What we perceive as rude may be just an expression of accumulated fatigue which is sometimes exacerbated by shop assistants having to deal with rude customers.
