Manolo the Columnist
Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.
Dear Manolo,
I recently totaled my car (not my fault, I swear) and because I can’t get a new one for some time, I must now walk 20 blocks to and from the bus stop to get to my office. I can’t abide flip-flops and I think sneakers look silly with business attire. What do you suggest?
Alexis
Manolo says, the Manolo’s friend is so lucky. Many people pay hundreds of dollars each month to sign up at the health club so they can walk on the treadmill, when all they really need to do is crash their cars and walk to the bus.
Even better, at the end of six months, the Alexis will be healthier, happier, and have more money in the bank with which to buy beautiful shoes, than either the commuting couch potatoes in their motor-boxes, or the health club hamsters on their exercise wheels.
Of the course, if one wishes to engage in this practical fitness regimen, one needs the appropriate shoes. The Manolo has been impressed by the recent joining together of the Nike and the Cole-Haan to produce the business shoes with the athletic shoe insides, feetwear which are prefect for the working girl who walks.
Here is the Cole-Haan Air Genie Ballet, wear it in good health.

Manolo, those are just lovely!
I, too, must walk at least three miles a day to get to and from the Port Authority and my office and the bus stop and all of those pleasant locations. I see many young ladies wearing the Flimsy Ballet Shoes. I overhear these young ladies wondering why they have the aching arches and the tired toes. Perhaps more of these young ladies should look into shoes like this one, which appears to have arch support and a substantial sole whilst still looking superfantastic.
I, however, have very narrow heels and I am too lazy to keep a skimmer like this on my feet. I prefer something with a delicate maryjane strap to support my laziness. Nonetheless, this is a lovely choice. I commend you for encouraging us hard-working commuters to take care of our feets!

Those are brilliant for grocery shopping on those horrible tile floors. I have been looking for a comfortable shopping shoe for ages, high heels always leave my legs tired when shopping and I think that many flats are just ugly and not worth the marginal comfort because they are flimsy. Since I never wear trainers unless I am training, I am going to solve my dilemma with these shoes.

Yes
I used to see the poor dears wearing the uggy athletic/tennis shoes and carring their office shoes in a bag. The men’s have had the disguised jock/dress shoe for many years now. Of course the flat shape of the men’s shoe, especially the well made ones, lead to less problems problems anyway. One of the reasons I despise the Croc on the mens, there are so many better looking and safer alternatives.

I confess I snickered as I read the working girl who walks this morning in the Express. I maintain I am a typical male and, as such, have a sense of humor that stopped developing when I was 14. Of course, I realize there are perhaps only a few ways to state that…but still, it’s funny!
And I agree with the others: I would much rather see the young ladies who walk to their office in those delightful shoes, instead of in flip-flops or in the dreaded Crocs.

@ theresa:
I had a similar problem so I have a HUGE supply of heel grippers on hand. Also, I buy my shoes in the narrow widths. I walked all around SF Union Square with these:

I have them in black patent but they also come in suede.

v good suggestion. I’ve been looking forward to checking out the Cole Haans in person after reading about them in magazines (and seeing them on the new Stacey London show.) They even make some cute heels. And they don’t look like Aerosoles.
