I like that hat too, though I would have liked to have seen more of the model's face and bolder makeup. It reminds me of a model in a Tony Kaye tire commercial who has a wooden birdcage on her head.

Replication of nature is to be admired as art when it is faithfully rendered... This is really no different than paintings done in the style of Realism. Attention to detail is extremely important. In this case, I just want to touch those butterflies. Did the designer do any purple flower hats? Mounds of mice? Flying frogs? I can just see this hat done so many different ways!

The Manolo does not disagree, indeed he too believes that this hat is wonderful and wacky, and nearly completely unwearable.

However, even though it may not apply in this case, his point still stands for discussion: under what circumstances is the faithful replication of nature to be admired as art?

Awww! I like this hat! And I would wear it!

Stuff like this always reminds me of the defense a girlfriend of mine gives for owning these so-ugly-they-are-almost-cute Orange Platform Tweed Loafers from Payless...she says,"It is terribly important to have a few things in your wardrobe which you have no intention of wearing in earnest."

I could be taken no more seriously in this butterfly hat than people take her in her Orange Tweed Loafers...and I think that's fabulous!

Query: Is it cheating when you produce something of beauty that relies entirely upon your faithful reproduction of nature for that beauty?
