Elizabeth Taylor, Fashion Icon?
Manolo says, the picture of the Elizabeth Taylor, from the 1970s, in the white hot pants has convinced the Manolo to say the few words about Liz and her fashion sense.
To wit: she does not seem to have much, or perhaps more properly, she seemed to lose any sense she did have right around the year 1967.
But you must judge for yourself..
Here she is young and gorgeous, dressed in the Chinese-style outfit with beautiful shoes, the very model of chic.
But this image is no indication of personal style, for when you are in your twenties and exceedingly beautiful, it matters not the least what you wear, your beauty negates your ugly clothes.
The true test of style begins in your thirties, when your looks begin to fade ever so slightly, and artifice become more important.
Work it girlfriend!
It is 1963 and Liz, 31, is perfectly accessorized with the gloves, the shoes, the purse and the most gorgeous coat. Even the hat, which would otherwise be faintly ridiculous, works here. Of the course, it does not hurt that she has also accessorized herself with Richard Burton.
It is the Manolo’s belief that this represents the high-water mark of the Elizabeth Taylor style.
And now, the trainwreck begins.
Ayyyyy! It is 1967. Trainwreck!
Yes, part of the problem going forward from here is that the last years of the 1960s and the entirety of the 1970s are the nadir of 20th Century fashion, and few of us looked good during those years, not even Liz.
Behold! 1973…
The Manolo calls this image, the Naughty Vicar Meets The Priestess of the Cult of Baal.
Nor were the early 1980s much better for Liz.
There is nothing quite as sexy as the man in uniform, eh?
She is not wearing the fur hat.
It is in the mid-to-late 1980s that Liz comes back into her own, as the late-Reagan, Early-Dynasty, Alexis-Carrington, big-haired, big-shouldered, middle-aged-cougar look achieves perfect symbiosis with the excessively flamboyant Liz style.
It is 1988, and Elizabeth Taylor is 56 years old and beautiful.
And here the Manolo would like to leave the Liz, frozen in this moment, but sadly time marches on, into the 1990s.
And so forth.
The Manolo loves the Liz. She is the figure to be admired; beautiful, emotional, dramatic, fantastically talented, and willing to risk all on love, and yet, she has more often then not need the serious making over.

I wear the 1973 style every morning, I call it “in the bathrobe, just out of the shower, towel on head” style.

She is a “victim of her own beauty”. She obviously feels with her beauty she can get away with anything.

Does anyone else see a very faint whisper of Lindsey Lohan in the young Elizabeth Tayor? You know, before Lindsey became all strung out & prone to drunken vehicular rampages. Even through Liz’s less-than-flattering fashion eras, she could give some of today’s younger stars a lesson on how to wear appropriate clothing.
*sigh* I long for the fashion sense some celebrities used to possess.

Oh, thank you, Manolo! I love Liz Taylor, too, and it’s been hard to watch her these past few years. I don’t agree with Miss Janey that Liz “obviously feels with her beauty she can get away with anything.” I think her appearance and fashion problems are more unconscious than that.
For one, we often forget she was a child star as well. How many of them do not turn into hot messes as they age? In addition, Taylor’s “hot mess” years coincide with a series of terrible events that pretty much any of us would struggle with. I always associate her physical and fashion decline as starting with the early and sudden death of Mike Todd in the late 1950’s (and a number of her close friends, including Montgomery Cliff and Rock Hudson) and her subsequent stormy relationships.
Second, I do think that some women who are exceptionally gifted by genetics do struggle with how to dress and manage their image as they age. If you are one of the fortunates who can eat whatever you want and stay thin, 35 is a hard brick wall of metabolic reality. But for those of us who have been dieting and dressing our plump selves since early adolescents, by the time we hit 40, we’ve learned what works on our body and what doesn’t–fashion and taste take practice, I think, like everything else. If you have the sort of looks she had when you are young, everything looks great on you, as the Manolo astutely points out. Had Taylor stayed willowy, some of her more drapey 1970s outfits would not have been the disasters they were on her more frowsy figure. As Taylor struggled with her weight and substance abuse, she’d also have to learn different strategies for dress. It’s not as easy to age gracefully as Diane Lane, Helen Mirrin, and Leslie Caron make it look.
Taylor was magnificent in so many films–my personal favorites are the performances she turned in with Tennessee Williams material. Not many actresses could hold a stage with Katherine Hepburn, but Taylor’s work in Suddenly Last Summer was transcendent. Dreadful script, wonderful performances there.
PS: I am going to begin thinking of myself as an “aging cougar.” We like it.

TheNeller and I posted at the same time–I was absolutely thinking of La Lohan when I posted above!
Little Red 18 years ago
Actually, TheNeller, I would say it’s the other way around. If I remember correctly, Lindsay Lohan did a cover and magazine spread where they made her over to look like La Liz. I can’t remember the magazine’s name now. But yes, the hint of La Liz is definitely there in Lohan.

Here you go! http://www.lohangroupie.com/lindsay-lohans-elizabeth-taylor-impression/
Although, I must say that Lindsay’s Liz impression makes it look like Liz just rolled out of a bordello, and not in the good way.
raincoaster 18 years ago
But she’d be the STAR of the bordello!
I agree that Lohan sometimes reminds me of Taylor; they are both gorgeous beyond the lot of mortals, and addicted to false eyelashes and eyeliner. And the whole leggings thing. Very rarely, however, is Dame Elizabeth Taylor photographed doing the cellphone/marlboro/GPS/notebook/frappucchino clutch they way starlets are nowadays. That just looks like they can’t afford assistants.

I’ve always thought there were two major things that led to Miss Taylor’s fashion decline: 1) Starring in “Cleopatra”, which would mess up anybody who wasn’t very careful to disassociate self from character, and 2) as Manolo says, the decline of fashion in general, which destroyed many another woman’s image.
Then there’s all the things in her personal life, and the fact that she never made a really good movie after 1967 . . . these things take a toll, too.

It probably didn’t help that Taylor entered her thirties right at the time Hollywood’s all-powerful, all-encompassing studio system was ending. If I had grown up being dressed by Helen Rose, Edith Head or Adrian and then suddenly found myself on my own — I’d be lost too.

While Dame Elizabeth’s taste in clothes may be a little eccentric, with her beautiful face and exquisite jeweles she could wear a burlap sack and still be magnificent.

Oh goodness. I hope you are right.

Not always in a good way; but still compelling

Elizabeth was very very sexy in her day . She definitely has had her share of famous men share her bedroom with her.

Oh, yeah – what Irene says, too.

Where can I get one of those Richard Burton accessories?

And here is the anthropological question to ask: can fashion really be judged separate from its time? Is there an age where one is no longer required to be fashionable?
Things like Liz of the 70s are the reason I promote civil disobedience to the Fashionable That Be. Just because the Emporer is stark naked and raving does NOT mean you have to join.

Liz and Richard on the second picture: what a couple! So beautiful and Richard is so sexy. It’s a pity that Liz didn’t stop with face lifting after a certain age. And loose her fashion spirit.

She is saying “Don’t look at the belly! Don’t look at the hips! Look up here, at my head!”
And she still has those gorgeous violet eyes in that overdressed head of hers.

A PERSONAL APPEARANCE BY THE LEGENDARY ICON Elizabeth Taylor

Those pictures were from the 70’s and 80’s, which was a pretty shady time in my opinion for fashion anyway. The problem is the pictures that everybody likes she is wearing something timeless, which is always good, but all of us at some point can be charged with following trends, which is what those pictures show.
