On the one of the hands, the Manolo finds Butler to be the delightful stylist, always amusing, even when his characters are in extremis. On the other of the hands, the Manolo frequently finds himself annoyed with Butler's juvenile loathing of society and family. Butler maintains the rebellious petulance of the adolescent boy well into old age. If he weren't such the good writer this would be terribly wearying.
