A week of Almodovar and Samuel Butler! Quite the week. There’s a great moment in the Merchant Ivory _A Room with a View_ in which the Reverend Mr. Beebe (about to go naked swimming with handsome boys) says the Butler title in a very fleshy way, thinking it’s a much, much hotter book than it is.

The Manolo was going to say the few words about the Bulter. On the one of the hands, the Manolo finds Butler to be the delightful stylist, always amusing, even when his characters are in extremis.
On the other of the hands, the Manolo frequently finds himself annoyed with Butler’s juvenile loathing of society and family. Butler maintains the rebellious petulance of the adolescent boy well into old age. If he weren’t such the good writer this would be terribly wearying.
