  5. Katie Says:

  6. Nancy R. Says:

  7. Sara Says:

    Maureen O’Hara?

  8. Gwen Says:

Barbara Walters? I don’t know why, but that’s what I thought of.

  9. bristlesage Says:

I agree with sftyisnoaccident, the Sophia Loren.

  10. Wellesley Says:

catherine denuvue? (I spelled that wrong)

  11. Wellesley Says:

    catherine denuvue?

  12. Margaret Says:

    Raquel Welch?

  13. Cristina Says:

    Yup, Sophia Loren.

  14. Annalucia Says:

The Annalucia is most puzzled by the leftwardmost photo in the second row; the ugly pants do not appear to belong on the same planet with the wearer of those beautiful and elegant shoes shown otherwise.

There is something about the very first pair shown, which suggests the nineteen-forties - that is, too early for the Loren and the Reynolds. So the Annalucia will make the wild guess, and say that it is the Rita Hayworth.

  15. tundragirl Says:

    i would posit sophia loren.

  16. la vache espagnole Says:

    Agreed. Sophia Loren.

  17. Jennie Says:

    Joan Crawford?

  18. Chaser Says:

Is the Annalucia too young to have lived through the 1970s? If so, you must understand that this was a dark and confusing era for everybody who wanted the nice clothing. There was much printed polyester, very thick, which bent like plyboard and baked the wearer. And there were such creatures as Goldie Hawn who, in their irrepressible 20’s cuteness, still managed to look good in terrifying pants such as these, which led others to wear them as well, even those of us whose backsides could ill afford to sport the the splashy prints.

If you are born later, well…thank heaven for living during enlightened times!

  19. Isay Says:

Perhaps the late Princess of Monaco, Princess Grace?

  20. in la Says:

I have no idea but the ones in the bottom row, with the ribbon ties, are gorgeous.

  21. la petite chou chou Says:

Impulse thought for me was also Sophia Loren….but now I think it is not her. Don’t know who it is. I’m not very good at this game. ha!

  22. quakerchic Says:

    Rita Hayworth or Betty Grable

  23. grudge girl Says:

That sucks! I totally guessed Sophia Loren for the Elizabeth Taylor challenge. I humbly submit that I put that idea into the Manolo’s head. If I’d only gotten on here sooner today…

  24. grudge girl Says:

Just to be ornery, I’m going to throw Raquel Welch into the mix. Because of the leopard pants.

  25. tamerlane Says:

    Lauren Bacall?

  26. Susan Says:

    Ginger Rogers

  27. Handmaiden Says:

    I second Lauren Bacall.

  28. Lizzy Q Says:

Shirley McLaine. They look like a dancer’s legs.

  29. Annalucia Says:

    Ayyyy Chaser!

The Annalucia turned eighteen in the year 1970. that is to say, after suffering a girlhood in which the Twiggy was posited as the ideal fashion figure (leaving the Annalucia, who was actually quite normal, feeling like the obese cow) she was then hit with the breathtaking ugliness of the 1970s. To think of her wasted youth - it is to weep.

Fortunately, now that she is not only solidly of the middle-age but is also a grandmother, she is finally learning to be choosy about what she wears and to accept only those colors and styles which are truly flattering to her.

Come to think of it, perhaps here is the right place to post her request to for the future editions of “Whose Shoes?” Manolo dear - may we please have more examples of queens, movie stars, presidents’ wives, artists and other such women from the period of 1920 to 1960? Even if I cannot guess who they are, I will have such pleasure in gazing upon their beautiful shoes.

  30. Mr. Henry Says:

Be still my heart, Grace Kelly.
