The Places In Between is probably one of the best books I’ve read in the last five years. Very insightful without melodrama, which, considering the circumstances in which the author was put/put himself, is all the more amazing.

If you liked The Places In Between, you’ll probably like The Prince of the Marshes, Rory Stewart’s second book. It follows his appointment as a temporary provincial governor in Iraq in 2003. If anything it is worthwhile simply to see what sort of craziness Mr. Stewart continues to throw himself into.

Veddy, the Manolo is roughly where you are, he is currently has two left to read: Flashman and the Angel of the Lord, and Flashman and the Tiger. Upon completion of those it is back to the beginning and and start all over again.

The Manolo imagines that the Flashman series will be not unlike the Patrick O’Brian books, required rereading every other year or so.

Manolo, I was going to ask you if you ever finished reading the entire Flashman series? I am 3 or 4 books away from the end, and I have enjoyed every book. Thank you for introducing me to these books! So different from any other historical fiction I’ve ever read.

Ah, Manolo – if only you could find me something for my 20 year old son. He’s another one of those guys who thinks that three pairs of shoes are the limit (black loafers for “dress”, sneakers, and winter boots) and that comfortable and “fit” translate into “I could get you, your best friend and myself into this sweater and still have room for the family dog”.
At least he understands the need for dark socks with the loafers.

The Flashman Papers are superb! However, avoid the movie Royal Flash at all costs. Even Malcom McDowell, Alan Bates & Oliver Reed cannot save this dog of an interpretation of the novel.

oh yes… dressing the man, is an excellent book… i had no idea how complex mens fashion was, i wish there was a woman’s equivalent to that book…
