Manolo the Columnist
Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.
Dear Manolo,I’m a new stay-at-home mom living in the suburbs and I need a good shoe to go with my new lifestyle. In the summer, there are lots of chic flats and sandals, but here in the middle of winter I’m at a loss. Please help.
Allison
Manolo says, it is true, before the birth of the first child, you were the footloose and free fancy young person with the time and energy to do as you pleased. Now, after the arrival of your joyful bundle, your movements are restricted, you have not had the full night’s sleep in months, and all of your cashmere sweaters have spots of baby vomit on the shoulders.
Still, you are committed to dressing in the old way, if only so you can wash your habitual sweat suit and feel like the human, and not the dairy animal, once again.
But, as we know, the suburban mothers have their uniform, as surely as the downtown girls do. Thus the trick is to be casual, and yet also more stylish than the other “ladies who are lunch (for someone small)”.
Look here is the Cove from Ugg, the fun boot that stands out from the crowd.

Am I to understand that The Manolo has endorsed a shoe from the Ugg???
Ayyyy! The Pigs, they are flying! The cats are laying down with the dogs! The Flying Monkeys, they are after me!
I know, Zarba! I was stunned! I felt the Earth tilt on its axis!
Something is…askew…
Now I must adjust my entire world view. This changes EVERYTHING!
Yes, it is somewhat surprising, but this is not the first time the Manolo has recommended the Ugg boot…

It is the Ugg Classic, and its derivatives, that Manolo does not like.
“Ladies who are lunch”…once again The Manolo has made me snort with glee! Fortunately I’d already finished my morning espresso when I read this.
Several months ago I succumbed to the comfortable, yet stylish joy of the Cove from Ugg (albeit the full shaft version – in black, natch). This has necessitated myriad explanations that it is the Ugg classic that sets my teeth on edge . . . .
I like these boots. They would go well with a parka and Norwegian mittens.
Somehow this brings to mind images of bikini-clad Scandinavian girls frolicking in the snow…
Must be the rawhide lacing.
I have the taller version of that boot, the Ugg ‘Kona’, and I love them! I have always hated the so-called “classic” Ugg– they’re not even an acceptable cold-weather boot for anything other than slouching around the house, as the sole is flimsy, there is no support for the foot (certainly not the arch!) and no ankle support at all. Add in the ugliness of the “classic”, and you have an all-around bomb.
The Kona, while not so fleecy, is far superior when it comes to both structure and visual appeal. I get compliments on them whenever I wear them.
Miestro Manolo, I humbly ask if your reccommendation of the Ugg has to do with the link on Friday Misc. Are you trying to help the third world child get the Uggs? After all the childrens in the third world live mostly in the tropics and need the ugly winter boots. I’m sure the Uggs would be so comfortable and good for the feet in a climate that has 100% humidity, tempertures in the 90′s and 100′s, and many mysterious fungi…
OOOOOPS! Those were the hideous Croc’s. My bad!
OMG. I never knew there could be a boot I would love!
