Manolo the Columnist

Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post

Dear Manolo,

As you know, Easter Sunday is coming up fast, and I need a new pair of shoes suitable for the occasion. Can you recommend something that captures the joyfulness of the season?

Maria

Manolo says, how the Manolo absolutely loves the spring, when the flowers bloom, and the birds sing, and the bees buzz, and the bridezillas rampage.

Truly it is the season of joy and shouting.

And, even better, spring is that season when the young Manolo’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of shoes!

Happily, this year there are many seasonally appropriate shoes about which to think. Indeed, among the hottest trends of this new year are the colorful, bright and shiny shoes. All of the shoe stores are now completely full to the brim with marvelous patent leather shoes in reds, and yellows, and greens, and pinks, truly, the entire rainbow of colors is available.

Of the course, Easter requires something in the pink range, something that allows the toes to run riot in the open air, something like these coral-colored, patent-leather, t-strap, peep-toe pumps, the Ilga from the Bally. Do they not fully express the happiness one experiences during this time of the year?

Also very suitable for those spring and summer weddings. :D

Oohhh, no. I’m sorry. If these were $19.99 at Payless (and they look like they could be) we’d all be making fun of them.

Manolo! I love you! I think you have fabulous taste, but I am not feeling those clunky shoes. They are clearly not for the muscular-of-calf, like me.
Who knows… maybe they will grow on me.
(PS They do strike me as distinctly Swiss, no? Sensible. Well made. Punctual. And STRONG.)

I rather like them — the color is great, and I like the gold edging on the heel, which makes them less teenybopperish.

Very nice for Easter –even if the heel’s too high for me.

I absolutely love the color, but unfortunately, I have to say ix-nay on the heel. A thick chunky heel and a delicate pastel color just seems contradictory.

I like the color and the edging as well but the heel has got to go. It makes them look like orthopedics.

I think they look like something grandma would wear. They’re awful.

If Carol did not live in the land of ice and snow, these may have had some possibilities. Alas, predictions are that it will still be chilly in my part of the world on Easter Sunday. My toes are not ready for that just yet…

Hate. The. Heel. It ruins the shoe. With a nicer, more slender heel, these would be pretty, though.

Me too. T-straps are one of my favorites. The peep-toe is OK though I prefer closed-toe t-straps. That heel though is a show-stopper. If the heel was even tapered that could save it but as it looks, nnaahhh.

Ah, Manolo, do not let the naysayers deflect you from your unerring taste. Although not for everyone, they are ideal for curbing the rampaging bridezilla without leaving the telltale puncture wounds on the pedicure that the stiletto would.

O dear. I fear that these shoes would make anyone’s feets look like Miss Piggy’s…something about the peep-toe, t-strap, ankle strap combination just looks, ah, pudgy, especially in the pinky color. The heel does not bother me at all, though.

Nonsense! They look cute and bold and strong all at once. Not everything pink has to be petite and tiny and delicate! These are sassy and brassy like they are about to do some serious Broadway-style dancing.

Those are some ugly ass shoes. You can do better than that!
