What the Manolo Is…
Manolo says, it is Tuesday, time to see what the Manolo is…
Normally, the Manolo is not the gadget person, someone who must each week rush out and obtain the latest piece of technological gimcrackery, however, many of the Manolo’s friends have been recommending the tiny little mini-computer, the Asus Eee PC as being suitable for the boulevardier blogger such as the Manolo.
“It is light and small and can be easily fitted into your man bag,” said one helpful friend.
“The Manolo does not have the ‘man bag’. It is the Swaine Adeney Brigg document case!”
“Whatever, it’s perfect for you, Manolo.”
And so the Manolo purchased this little inepensive computer and it arrived yesterday. And now, today, the Manolo is sitting in the cafe, sipping the cappuccino, and blogging to you with his new machine. Yes, the Asus Eee PC is very tiny, and light, and powerful enough to surf the internets, but unfortunately, the keyboard is too small for the Manolo’s thick and inelegant fingers, and this has been terribly frustrating, as the Manolo is the touch-typer of some ability.
The Manolo suspects that he will use this new machine occasionally, but will ultimately rely upon his beloved MacBook.
Although, this objet d’art calls powerfully to the Manolo.
“Buy me, use me, love me,” says its siren song.

Ella Fitzgerald singing the songs of the incomparable Duke Ellington. Could there be another definition of perfection?
The Manolo continues to impress with his exquisite tates.

Dearest Manolo, why not the MacBook Air? Why, why? My heart breaks that a Mac user would stray when looking for an “objet d’art,” for surely le MacBook d’Air est assez d’un objet d’art pour tous.

Ah, Harold McGee. He is truly a fountain of knowledge. Another good source of cooking science info is Shirley Corriher, who is somewhat more easily readable than McGee.

The Manolo admits that this little computer was the impulse purchase. Happily, it was somewhat inexpensive.
Do not worry, soon the MacBook Air shall be the Manolo’s!

The Swaine Adeney Brigg Ltd. document case? I not surprised that the Manolo has impeccable taste in man-satchels.

I have an eee PC, and I’ve found that for limited, on-the-go use, it works just fine, though I wouldn’t want to work all day on it. But it’s not terribly expensive and it’s more or less indestructible, so I can throw it in my (largish) purse, not even in its case, and not worry about it. (It’s also a lot easier to work on a plane with it than with a full-size laptop.)
The keyboard is rather wonky, though. I have tiny hands and I still have trouble with it — among other things, the right-side shift key is in the wrong place. But for a very portable computer you don’t have to worry about, it’s not a bad deal.

I, too, love the MacBook Air, but rather than purchase it, my plan is much simpler: I shall make the (tragically, married) Steve Jobs fall in love with me and give me one inscribed with miniatures of panels from the Normandie and Persian love poems. I don’t read Persian and neither does he, but what the hell. If you’re going to dream, dream big.

I too am pining away for the Mac Air. But I live in a very anti-Mac household, plus the horrors of the tax bill for the year has been realized. So, no Mac for moi.
