We recently did Liz Taylor - I don’t know who this person is. They do show a thick ankle, but nonetheless elegantly shod. (Don’t we all show a thick ankle from time to time?) The occasional comfortable shoe made me think of the Maimi Eisenhower story.
After one of Ike’s inauguration, she donated a pink formal and pink shoes to the Smithsonian Museum for the First Ladies Exhibit. Sometime later, she had to attend a function where she had to stand for a long period of time in a receiving line. She was wearing pink again. She called up the Smithsonian and asked if she could borrow her pink shoes back. She said, well they are broken in and they are comfortable. This seems like a good celebrity shoe story!
I think Helen Mirren hasn’t got cankles like that. I think I would say it looks like Blythe Danner. She wears lots of neutral colors and I think she favors sensible shoes, also.
Helen Mirren? Good God people! She’s always been a thin, willowy hottie with great gams.
To me, this person’s weight has see-sawed. There is a HUGE difference between the ankles and feet between several of those pictures. It even looks like occasional gout or something. The key, to me, is figuring out that black and white that looks like it’s from the 60s. Who was a bit of a sassy-posing, knee-booted mini-skirt wearer in the 60s, in spite of a rather non-Twiggy-esque figure?
Other than Liz Taylor (who, incidentally, I don’t remember being one of the recent answers), I got nothin’.
We already had Hillary. Could be Barbara Bush, but when was the last time you saw her wearing open-toed shoes? I’m sticking with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
I’m not sure who this is, but it is definately someone in their “September” or possibly October years. The black and white clearly indicates someone from the sixties, and the staid styles and cankles indicate someone who is not in their prime. I don’t know that even Dame Judy has fluctuated in weight, but it seems that the conservative type outfits would indicate someone who is British and over 55. Definately not Helen Mirren (who wore the purple, platform prostitute pumps in a Who’s shoes not that long ago).
I think that b&w photo looks like the ’20’s, so I’m going to guess Coco Chanel. This is obviously a woman of a certain age. But I don’t know what she looked like at the end.
That earliest picture is definitely period 1960s. I thought about Streisand, but she’s too short to wear so many flats and low heels. I don’t recall her having such weight fluctuations, but my guess is Vanessa Redgrave.
This person looks to have only really has one cankle - possible leg injury. I am thinking the suede wedge sensible shoes are the later years. Being heavier doesn’t necessarily lead to cankles, and given the sensible shoes, I cannot see Kirstie, Oprah, or some of the others ever appearing in public in those shoes. This is a toughie!
Since the answer’s been revealed, I’d like to add that Judy Dench snapped an Achilles’ tendon in 1981, ten days before previews were scheduled to open with her as Grizabella in the original London performance of _Cats_ . So g-dog is on the money– the cankle is injury-related

Laura Bush? The carpet looks presidential.
My other instinct was Camilla Parker-Bowles, but I think she’s been done recently.

Helen Mirren

We already had Laura Bush — and this person, I suspect, is much older than Laura Bush.
April 30th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Brigitte Bardot?
April 30th, 2008 at 10:15 am
However, I don’t think that *Barbara* Bush is out of the question…
April 30th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Kathleen Turner
April 30th, 2008 at 10:27 am
I definitely thought Kathleen Turner right away for some reason.
April 30th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Or, perhaps, Kathy Bates?
April 30th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Liz Taylor (or my Aunt Bobby.)

I agree with DivaLisa. I think it’s Helen Mirren.

April 30th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Donna Karan?
I’m stumped.
April 30th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Oprah? I think she’s been done before, but the weight seesaw thing is what has me.
April 30th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
I’m voting Babs…
April 30th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Kirstie Alley
April 30th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Gotta be Hillary! Look at those cankles.
April 30th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Jane Fonda.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Oh cankles. I’m saying Hillary.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
We already had Hillary. Could be Barbara Bush, but when was the last time you saw her wearing open-toed shoes? I’m sticking with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Kirstie Alley….she loved her leg warmers!!
April 30th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
It must be Judy Dench. Must be.
April 30th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Perhaps Doris Day?

Lynn Redgrave? She’s old enough and has had the weight fluctuations, for sure.
April 30th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
martha stewart?
April 30th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Hmmm… I agree that it could be Judi Dench- she’s my first thought, but it could also be Princess Anne. In other words, I have no idea.

How about Lulu? (To Sir with Love)
April 30th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Shirley Temple Black, if not then it’s Helen Mirren
April 30th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I have no idea who this is, but the cankles could be due to pregnancy rather than weight fluctuation.
April 30th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
I immediately thought Kirstie Allie. (Also it appears the subject must be Caucasian.)
