They didn't have an ankle strap, just several straps going across the arch of the foot joined by the central strap, plus they had a toe loop. Most gladiator sandals are so clunky looking, and these weren't, the straps being just broad enough to be practical. I wish they still made them. I like these ones, but they're too spendy for me! They don't have the ankle strap, just 2 large leather bands crossing the feet and small leather strap connecting the 2 larger ones.
