White Socks and the Dark Dress Shoes
Manolo says, one of the Manolo’s archivist-historian friends sends the Manolo the following request.
Dear Manolo,
I was kidding my assistant Paul that our interns this summer were wearing white socks with dark shoes.
He replied, “Oh, who do you think you are, The Manolo!”
I’d appreciate it if The Manolo could send Paul a note explaining to him that good footwear needs appropriate hosiery.
The Manolo reminds Paul (and you) that there is only one time when the white socks are acceptable with dark dress shoes….
When you are pretending to be Michael Jackson.

The Bob Fosse was also known for the white socks and the dark shoes, to say nothing of the rolled trousers. Perhaps the dancer in this video is copying the style as an act of homage.
I agree with the above poster. I have occasionly seen the look on those with slim shoes and pants seeking to imitate a 50′s or early 60′s bohemian look. It must be done with care, using slim cuts and elegant socks.
Or if you are pretending to be Dave Letterman.
We should just say ‘no’ to the one-handed glittery glove, as well – no? :)
I’m not sure what is more disturbing…pretending to be Michael Jackson or wearing white socks with dark shoes!
Or Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face!
Haha!
That made me laugh. I sometimes break this rule myself when I think no one will notice.
A sort of smart and nerdy look that can be bohemian and elegant can pull off white socks and black shoes. (Not that I’d ever be guilty of it myself.)
What a fashion mistake! Anyway I guess i shouldn’t act like the fashion police because my grandad does this sometimes, white socks with dress shoes. It really makes him look his age – 90!
If memory serves…couldn’t Fred Astaire pull off the white socks/dark shoes look?
(Of course, Fred Astaire could pull off a lot of things that wouldn’t work for us mere mortals.)
Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse, Beatniks. Have you noticed anything about these people? They are all dead! I’m not saying the combination caused it, I’m just saying there is a correlation.
What a bunch of sheep. The white sock black shoe combo rocks when I am dancing to a Rockabilly band in one of my beautiful late 50s early 60s suits.
The rest of you can do as your told and fall in line with whatever jackbooted fashionista that comes along. Style is preferable to fashion. If you really need someone to tell you what socks to wear then so be it.
Fashion is style. Fad is not style. And the fad of white socks with black shoes went out a long time ago. It’s on the same shelf as Jocksocks and sandals.
