Manolo the Columnist

Manolo says, here is the Manolo´s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.

Dear Manolo,

I am going to LA in April to visit an old high-school boyfriend, whom I haven´t seen in almost 28 years. He has proposed various outings at the beach, rollerblading on the boardwalk, climbing in the mountains, and visiting clubs in Malibu, but alas! I am the NY girl and possess very few action/adventure type shoes. What should I wear?

Laura

Manolo says, Ayyyy! The Perfect Chick Flick!

Our heroine (to be played by Diane Lane) has reached the Age of the Middle with the typical sort of romantic scars. Perhaps the Mr. Right has never come along, or perhaps he whom she thought was Mr. Right turned out to be Mr. Having-It-Off-With-the-Co-Worker.

Either way, in the opening scene she is alone, just her, the television, and the giant bowl of Rocky Road, when she notices that the name of the composer of the heartfelt and soaring music which accompanies the latest film vesion of the minor Jane Austen classic bears the name suspiciously similar to that of her first boyfriend.

“I mean, come on, how many Andrew W. Gabblefarbs can there be, right?”

Ten minutes, and one furious session of Google-fu later, and she has the email!

Cut to the parking lot outside of the Moonshadows Lounge, on the Pacific Coast Highway, where, following the full day of rollerblading up the side of the Santa Monica Mountains, her rediscovered love, Andy, taller and handsomer than ever, has taken her for the nightcap. As he helps her into the passenger side of his spotless Bentley, he steals the sly kiss… powerfully reciprocated!

Fade to black.

What can be more action/adventure than the cowboy boot, which is also very “of the moment” in Los Angeles. Here is the N4539 5/4 from Lucchese, perfert to pair with jeans, or barelegged with the short black dress.

Aiiii! A rare breach by the Manolo…love you to death but I’m just not feeling the short black dress and boots on a 46yr old or so woman – and I can say this being also of a “certain age”. I know it’s LA but does that mean we have to take leave of our senses and try to emulate Britney?! And boots on the Venice boardwalk?! I would think such an outing called for good, cute – but durable sandals… which you manolo are so much more adept at finding examples of than I.

Hola to the Unsure in MO! La BellaDonna, she is also the East Coast woman of the Middle Age, and she would DEFINITELY be wearing the boots, rather than the cute sandals, for all the various outings suggested! However, being of the Middle Age, she would wear the boots with the LONG black dress with the slits up the side, rather than the short black dress.

    Really? Cowboy boots? I say…ick.

(btw, I had the experience of meeting up with my high school boyfriend, who flew his plane up to see me, took me shopping and to an amazing dinner. Of course, he is married).

manolo, darling, are you playing a little trick on us?

I love my cowboy boots, however if I went from the chilly east coast to the warmer west coast, I don’t think I could hide my poor pale toes from the sun.

Oh, no. Seriously. NO. She needs a pair of sneakers, a pair of flat sandals and a strappy stiletto. Those 3 items will take her many, many places in LA.

Indeed, I am with the rest of the commenters. The story is wonderful, but the shoes? Yes, on the right person with the particular personal style they could be terrific, but for the kind of thing she is asking for they seem, frankly, a little silly. I would think a pair of wedge espadrilles, some cute flats and sturdy but fashionable sneakers (for the hiking) would be more what she needs.

Oh no you DIDN’T. Cowboy boots, Manolo? I’m appalled at your recommendation.

oh…poo on all of you. I love the cowgirl boots. Unexpected and interesting choice.
Also, as Paul Newman said to his burlesque-dancing mistress (while playing the erstwhile governor of Louisana), they’re good for traction.

Indeed! How many Andrew W. Gabblefarbs can there be? And indeed, how many Manolos can there be?

I can´t believe what a sad lot of old prunes you all are. Geez, learn to live a little.

I love this suggestion, and I love these boots, and I¨m a middle aged woman. You don´t need to be 21 to rock black cowboy boots, just ask Georgia O´Keefe.

Andy will like cowboy boots better than any ol’ strappy stiletto. They say “free-spirited!”

I adore the boots (for the record, I am 24 and dress like a Northwesterner, so your mileage may vary!), but as an outdoorsy type person I must caution the writer that her feet will be far more comfortable in a pair of sporty sandals or cute sneakers for the hiking part of her romantic adventure! Perhaps a pair of leather Chaco’s sandals, which are both sturdy and attractive?

Unless the writer’s plan is to purposefully incapacitate herself on the hiking trail, thus encouraging her soulmate to make a dramatic and romantic rescue? ;)

  15. L. April 7, 2009 at 12:48 pm #

Yes, agreed with the Evie! I am okay with the boots, but for the purposes that the letter-writer describes, I think they might leave her overheated, crippled, and hobbling–not so attractive.

  16. Nariya April 7, 2009 at 4:05 pm #

If you do end up going for the boots, make sure you beak them in. A good pair of broken-in cowboy boots can get you through most anything… but the broken-in part is crucial!

I do think, however, that cowgirl-boots-as-LA-chic has had its day–some time in the early noughties. However, if the gentle writer wishes to “repeat the past,” as did Mr. Gatsby with his early beloved, then she might wear them.
