While the over the knee boot was a fashion in ye days of ye pirates, it was originally the boot of the military/aristocratic horseman. You will see paintings of them worn with the top rolled down for pedestrian comfort. The horse has been associated with the upper class for centuries since they are too expensive for the common man. One must be careful to avoid the apple on pipe cleaners look with them.

No, I'm not an under 30 modelesque type, AndI have a sense that these will not turn out to be popular. Don't waste your money, unless you look like a Victoria's secret model.

Dear Lulu, if you plan to audition for a community theater production of Captains Courageous or if you need a costume for Pirate Night on a Disney Cruise then by all means, indulge your inner Johnny Depp or Errol Flynn. Just make sure you're very thin and are at least 5'8" even though 5'10" is better. Otherwise, just say no.

But if one actually is an English privateer, it's okay then? Ah, good. It's too late to take these back.

I still have some flat black suede over-the-knee boots from ~1990 which I have worn on and off ever since then, being a person who wears what suits me rather than what others are wearing. VERY buccaneerish (they lace up at the top back), and best worn with the white large-sleeved pirate shirt over leggings. Or they were back then. Now I'm a little older and the body in general is not quite so wonderful. However the legs are holding up remarkably well so leggings are still OK, but with the big floppy jumper/jersey/pullover instead of the pirate shirt. And I've just bought another pair of extra tall flat boots, this time with elastic sides.

Thank you for your advice, the Manolo! I wonder if perhaps adding a bit of a heel would help steer away from King's-Strumpet-midget-extra syndrome. If all else fails, I am totally willing to be a French Musketeer! Cheers, La BellaDonna!
