Manolo the Columnist
Manolo says, here is the Manolo’s latest column for the Express of the Washington Post.
0Dear Manolo,
As a high school aged girl, I find myself in need of a pair of comfortable yet stylish pair of flats for the fall. I am willing to pay about a hundred dollars, as long as the shoes are worth it! I love soft leather and bright jewel tones, but I also like funky patterns. I need to be able to wear this shoe with a variety of outfits. Can you help?
Kate
Manolo says, how well the Manolo remembers his own days as the scholarship student at Our Lady of the Flaming Spleen Country Day School, where the teaching sisters everyday lived up to the motto, “The Wrathful Word Turneth Away Evil.â€
Naturally, the Manolo stood out among the other children for his keen fashion sense, extreme poverty, and homemade patent squirrel-leather shoes, although these things often made him the target of bullies.
But, genius must eventually be acknowledged, and the Manolo’s moment arrived when Sister Imaculada Lopez selected him to provide costuming for her groundbreaking production of “Uncle Vanyaâ€. At the end, everyone agreed that Eduardo Castro’s interpretation of Serebryakov had been greatly enhanced by his metallic, feathered headdress.
Look! Here is the Leve from Jessica Simpson, the cute and inexpensive ballarina-type flat available in the variety of colors. The Manolo is especially partial to the eggplant.

Cute! I just got my little sister a pair of very similar shoes to start her freshman year of high school! Good to know that at 23, I’m still hip to high school style :)

Very cute flats …
Has anyone else, while browsing in the shoe department, picked up a Jessica Simpson shoe noticed who “designed” it and quickly place it back on display? Then glance over your shoulder to make sure no one noticed you fondling a Jessica Simpson shoe? I feel sort of bad about this because a few of her shoes are very nice, decent quality for a good price.

Okay, so the eggplant is ADORABLE! The color completely adds to it. Lovely.

I’m somewhat blown away that someone in high school can afford $100 for a single pair of shoes. These are very cute, though.

O Lord, have mercy on her poor arches, not that she cares.
Also, gee, I’m with Pam! She can blow $100 on shoes?

I am impressed with this girl. She appears to understand the concept of quality and value: buy nice or buy twice. Maybe her mom gave her $500 for school clothes and rather than get five pairs of cheap Payless shoes, she, after learning at the feet of the Manolo, decided she wants one pair of Good Shoes.
Or maybe it’s her own hard-earned money and she really, really understands value.

Nice pick – I have those shoes too! Just to give the girl another option, I also would recommend the Salsa flats by J SHOES (www.jshoes.com for pic). Black or Ruby Leather adorned with a black stud and small feather accents. Soft leather + funky, right?
