I haven’t read Elle in ages, but when I actually read the (german) Vogue it seemed to me that not only is there a lot advertising (which is good, because ads finance the magazine) but the articles are virtually undistinguishable from the adverts. Ads and editorial content are totally depending on each other and the fashion press has long lost its freedom and independence.
Sad.
So nowadays I prefer the fashion blog, even if I can’t take it with me into the bathtub.

Seconding that. I’d much rather read about fashion from bloggers like Style Spy than some of the uninspired, formulaic and poorly written pieces I’ve seen recently in major newspapers (*cough*LATimes*cough*).
