Andie McDowell vs. The Withered Exercise Crones
Manolo says, the always beautiful Andie McDowell has the advice for remaining youthful into middle age..
When you were a young model, in an industry not known for positive body images, did you ever have problems with weight?
There was a time when someone complained to my agency that I was overweight. It was after I’d been in New York for a few years, and I was trying to figure out how to maintain my weight. I was 132 pounds then, and I’m 5-foot-8 – and still eat healthy and exercise. So I said, “Tell them not to book me. This is the best I can do.” And shortly after, I got Calvin Klein commercials and a movie, so it didn’t stop me.You still look model weight to me
Right now I’m about 137 to 138 pounds and I feel pretty good about it. Also, as soon as you get older, your face starts o look drawn – that’s why I think I’m better off with those 5 extra pounds.
Both of the women below were born in 1958…
Perhaps the four-hour Pilates sessions are not the secret to eternal youth.

Let’s focus for a second on the following phrase:
“I was 132 pounds then, and I’m 5-foot-8”
Models today are closer to 6′ and weigh about 112 pounds. ..

As Catherine Deneuve (among others) has said, after 40 one must choose between one’s face and one’s derriere.

Wow. At 86, my mother lost a couple of her teeth and her smile changed. Otherwise, the hairstyle, the emaciated arms, the bony face Madonna’s wearing–she looks identical to my mother in that photo.
While Andie McDowell looks fantastic.

I will be the lone voice of dissent, here, I guess.
Yes, Andie McDowell looks better in her photo than Madonna does in hers. But you know what? I don’t come to the Manolo for skinny-shaming any more than I would for fat-shaming. I’m down with making fun of how people dress, or simply for being ridiculous humans, but I’m not down with dog-piling a woman for being “too fit” or “too muscular.”
I would further add that Andie McDowell’s original career was based purely on her looks, and looking good for a camera, and so it’s not surprising she photographs well. I’m glad to see women who don’t look like preying mantises be celebrated as beautiful. But I never thought that much of her as an actress, and somewhat resented her being pretty and untalented in movies. Meanwhile, Madonna had to meet certain standards of looks when she started out, but also had to and has to sing and dance. If she finds it easier to tour and record, or just feels better, from being in preposterous shape, I say more power to her.
